This method comprises supplying a detergent composition containing β-hydroxypropionic acid as the effective component into a pipe to dissolve silicate scale deposited on the inside wall of the pipe. The amount of β- hydroxypropionic acid added is desirably 1-100 wt.% though it may be suitably determined according to the type of the scale and the extent of deposition and to the type, scale, etc., of the water system to be cleaned. The balance may be a solvent such as water, another scale remover, a slime controlling agent, or the like.
