Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out a proper caulking without changing a pressing roll even when a thickness of a metal plate which forms a seam part is increased. SOLUTION: This device is an improved caulking device wherein a bent curving part is provided with both ends of a metal plate along a longitudinal direction, and the seam part 4 is formed by meshing with the curving parts each other. The seam part is then caulked by press contacting an upper roll member 6 and a press contacting roll 19 above and below the seam part. The press contacting roll is provided with a roll shape press contacting peripheral face 19a and a large diameter control face 19b at both sides of the peripheral face. A grooved open space 19c formed by the press contacting peripheral face and the control faces of both sides has a capacity needed for accepting and caulk fastening the seam part. At an edge part of the press contacting peripheral face located at a boundary of the press contacting peripheral face and the both control faces, a concave part 20 is formed for escaping purpose when the seam part is rolled. The concave part is preferably circularly continuous with the press contacting peripheral face edge part.

At the time of caulking, the gob joint tends to extend in the width direction due to vertical pressing force, and the caulking is performed by regulating the guide plate 9b. In order to perform proper caulking, the width and height of the groove space should be substantially equal to the width and thickness of the goby joint 4. However, the thickness of the metal plate forming the pipe main body 1 is slightly different due to variations at the time of manufacture and the like.
Along with this, the width and thickness of the goby joints 4 are slightly different. Therefore, when the groove space is formed on the basis of the reference plate thickness, even if a gob joint formed by a metal plate having a plate thickness smaller than the reference is to be crimped, the crimping will be loose. On the other hand, if a gouge joint of a metal plate thicker than the standard is to be crimped, the axis of the pressure roll 9 is seized or the pressure roll 9 is broken or cracked. On the other hand, if the press roll 9 is replaced each time according to the thickness of the plate, the work requires time and labor.

As shown in FIG. 3, the upper surface of the square pipe 1 is inserted between the upper forming roll 6 and the pressing roll 19 with the goby joint 4 being received in the groove space 19 c of the pressing roll 19. When receiving the pressing force of the pressure roll 19 and the upper forming roll 6, when the metal plate forming the square pipe 1 has the thinnest thickness, the regulating surface 19 b is connected to the goby joint 4 as in the related art. The crimping is performed by the press-contacting peripheral surface 19a and the upper forming roll 6 while restricting the rolling to the side.

When the thickness of the metal plate that can be received in the groove space 19c is larger than the set reference thickness (the thickness of the product with the smallest variation), both sides of the goby joint 4 are brought into contact with the press-contact peripheral surface 19a. Although a large acting force is exerted on the regulating surface 19b, the recess 20 is formed at the boundary between the press contact peripheral surface 19a and the regulating surface 19b.
Is formed, the rolled portion of the metal plate escapes into the recess 20 (see FIG. 4), so that all of the above-mentioned acting force is not imposed on the regulating surface 19b.

Therefore, even in the case of the goby joint 4 having a large thickness, accurate crimping can be performed by the single pressure roll 19 without damaging the pressure roll 19. The rolled portion that escapes to the escape portion 20 protrudes from both sides of the surface of the goby joint 4, but does not hinder the use of the square pipe 1 because the goby joint 4 is on the inner side of the pipe.

The pressure contact peripheral surface and the regulating surface do not necessarily have to be formed integrally, but may be constituted by combining separate members to form a pressure roll. Further, the device of the present invention can also be applied to caulking of metal plate gouge joints other than square pipes. In this case, the pressure roll is rotatably supported not by the core but by an appropriate support, and cooperates with the upper roll member to caulk the goby joint.

According to the present invention, when caulking and fixing a goby joint using a pressure roll, the acting force exerted on the regulating surface due to a slight difference in plate thickness is released by rolling the rolled portion into the recess. As a result, even if the plate thickness is increased, it is possible to appropriately fix the crimping roll without breaking it. For this reason, it is not necessary to replace the pressure roll every time the sheet thickness is different, and it is possible to improve the working efficiency of the caulking fixation.
