Abstract
Prodn. of H3PO4 and CaSO4 by-prod. comprises reacting Ca phosphate (I), present in a CaSO4-contg. slurry being circulated through a series of reaction zones, with H2SO4 and H3PO4, with sepn. of CaSO4 and extn. of at least part of the H3PO4 prod. The flow rates in the system are defined by: (1) a general circulation rate through at least some zones which is 300-400% of the base flow (A) i.e. the rate of discharge from the reaction zones; (2) a circulation across a vacuum cooling zone of 2000-400% of (A); (3) local circulation in the reaction zones of 500-2000% of (A) and (4) the sum of (1) and (3) is at least 2500% of (A) in each zone where reactants are added and in the immediately following zones. The zones are maintained at 30-105 (pref. 30-90) deg.C, with P2O5 content 15-52%; H2SO4 content 0.25-25% and solids content 15-62 (pref. 20-62)%. Dwell time is 1-23 hr. and the reaction conditions are chosen to provide a prod. acid of 33-52% P2O5 and 0.25-2.5% H2SO4 contents. The by-prod. is dihydrate; anhydrite (II) or hemihydrate, depending on H2SO4/P2O5, concns.
