ELEVATA PIENEZZA ED ELASTICITA’ E PRODOTTI OTTENUTI HIGH FULLNESS AND ELASTICITY AND PRODUCTS OBTAINED
SETTORE TECNICO TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a chemical process included in the tanning process and suitable for obtaining leathers having peculiar aesthetic and functional characteristics.
L’invenzione concerne anche pellami aventi peculiari caratteristiche estetiche e funzionali ottenuti mediante determinati processi conciari. The invention also concerns leathers with peculiar aesthetic and functional characteristics obtained through certain tanning processes.
STATO DELL’ARTE STATE OF THE ART
The tanning process is long and complex and is essentially a chemical process consisting of several successive phases interspersed with mechanical operations, in which animal skins are made not only non-putrescible but also commercially attractive with the conferment of certain characteristics of color, softness, consistency. , smell, tenacity, resistance and other characteristics.
The hides used in the tanning process can derive from any species of terrestrial, marine, amphibious or volatile animal, the use of which is obviously permitted or regulated by current regulations.
The entire process can be divided into three macro-stages: tanning, post-tanning treatments and finishing. A plurality of individual phases with specific purposes belongs to each of these macro-phases.
The tanning includes all the operations of preparation for tanning, also called riviera, and the actual tanning. Riviera operations include: soaking, fleshing, hair removal, liming, splitting, deliming, maceration, degreasing.
Soaking has the purpose of giving back to the skin the water it had lost in the preservation process, eliminating dirt, blood, dung and salt in the case of skins preserved by salting. It is carried out in the drum with the use of water, auxiliaries and surfactants.
Hair removal is used to eliminate hair and epidermis, and is therefore always carried out unless a skin with hair or fur is to be produced. Calcination serves to loosen the fibrous web of the skin. Since depilation and calcination are carried out with the same chemicals, in reality the two phases are carried out simultaneously and therefore we are currently talking about a depilation-calcination phase or, more simply, liming. Hair removal is most often carried out with reducing agents, in particular sodium sulfide (Na2S), sodium sulfide (NaHS) and lime (Ca (OH) 2, calcium hydroxide).
Deliming, maceration and degreasing are other important chemical operations. With deliming, a large part of the lime used in the hair removal process is removed from the skin. Strong acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric), weak acids (formic, acetic, boric etc.), or acid dissociation salts, such as ammonium sulphate or chloride, can be used as deliming agents. Maceration completes the action of calcination causing a further relaxation of the collagen structure. For this purpose, proteolytic enzymes are used. Degreasing serves to eliminate or at least reduce the natural fat of the leather which could cause difficulties in the absorption and fixation of chemical products and various types of defects on the finished leather. It is carried out with the use of ionic or non-ionic surfactants.
Fleshing is a mechanical operation by which the residues of meat and adipose tissue of the subcutaneous layer are eliminated.
After the riviera operations, however, the leather is still putrescible and must be subjected to tanning, usually after pickling. The most common and widespread types of tanning are chrome tanning and vegetable tanning, while other types of tanning can see reagents such as synthetic tannins, phosphonium salts, aluminum, zirconium, aldehydes, oils or mixtures of them used.
Tanned leather is still only a rigid, cardboard-like semi-finished product with a characteristic color of the type of tanning with which it was obtained. To become a marketable finished product, it must be subjected to post-tanning and finishing treatments.
I trattamenti post concia comprendono: messa a vento, pressatura, rasatura, spaccatura, riconcia, tintura, ingrasso, asciugatura, ed altri. Post tanning treatments include: winding, pressing, shaving, splitting, retanning, dyeing, fattening, drying, and others.
Messa a vento, pressatura, rasatura, spaccatura e asciugatura sono operazioni meccaniche. Winding, pressing, shaving, splitting and drying are mechanical operations.
Retanning, dyeing and fattening are key chemical processes for determining the desired product characteristics of the leather in production. In particular, retanning is an optional treatment with auxiliary and tanning agents, often different from those used for the main tanning, which serves to modify the characteristics imparted by the main tanning. For example, if you want to produce a less flexible leather than a pure chrome leather, a retanning with vegetable tannins is carried out. Conversely, if you want to produce a more flexible and soft leather from a pure vegetable leather, a chrome retanning is carried out. In addition, aluminum, zirconium or titanium tanning agents are often used as retanning agents to obtain a more reactive leather towards dyes and therefore more intense and brilliant colors.
Dyeing is an operation with which the desired color is given to the leather. It is usually carried out in a drum, at a predefined temperature, with dyes, usually acid dyes, but also organometallic, cationic, reactive, sulfur dyes, etc.
Fattening is a chemical operation that serves to introduce a lubricant between the fibers of the skin that keeps the fibers separate and allows them to flow over each other. In this way the leather can take on flexibility, softness and other commercially appreciated characteristics. For fattening, oils or fats of animal, vegetable, synthetic or mineral origin are used. Naturally, the oils or fats as such, in order to be usable as lubricants for leather, are chemically modified or added with emulsifiers to make them water-soluble and above all to give them a partial ability to bond with the leather. Usually, cationic (quaternary ammonium, etc.) or non-ionic hydrophilic groups (sulfonates, sulphates, phosphates, phosphonates, etc.) cationic (quaternary ammonium, etc.) are introduced to make the greasers soluble. In the frequent case of fattening with anionic products, the chemism of the fattening is very similar to that of the tincture so that, sometimes, dyeing and fattening are carried out simultaneously.
Once the post-tanning treatment operations have been completed, and in particular the drying, the leather is ready to be subjected to the delicate and complex operations, both mechanical and chemical, of finishing, useful to give it the desired aesthetic and functional characteristics.
The chemical finishing consists in covering the surface of the leather with a more or less thick film of synthetic material (acrylic, butadiene, polyurethane resins) or natural (casein, albumins, protein film-formers, based on modified cellulose) inside which they can be contained pigments, dyes, opacifiers, polishes, various auxiliaries. The film can be made to form on the surface of the skin starting from monomers or polymers of different nature or it can be preformed and made to adhere to the surface of the skin with the aid of adhesives. In the first case, the mixture of film-forming binder and auxiliaries is deposited on the surface of the leather by spray, with rollers (roll-coater), with the glazing machine (production of "varnished"). In the second case, the film is more frequently of a polyurethane nature, with fantasy designs, with different thicknesses, on different supports from which it is transferred onto the skin. For this reason this type of finishing is often generically referred to as "transfer finishing".
In current practice, the search for innovative products or other production needs often lead to reversing or modifying the sequence of operations, first coming to perform the finishing and then rewetting the leathers, retanning, dyeing and greasing, combining and exchanging all the normal phases of the tanning process.
However, a fundamental difference between the chemical finishing operations and the chemical operations of the tanning and post-tanning phases consists in the fact that while the latter are carried out with absolute humidity of the hides high, the former are carried out substantially dry, that is to say with absolute humidity of the hides, on their dry weight, less than 25% (on average the finishing operations are carried out with absolute humidity of the hides below 15%, while the operations of the tanning phases and post-tanning treatments are carried out with absolute humidity of the hides usually higher than 50% and even up to 2000% and more).
The use of elastomers in finishing operations has long been known. For example, in US patent 4,581,034 a finishing process is described according to which a carboxylated synthetic elastomer obtained by emulsion by polymerizing unsaturated carboxylic acids, butadiene or isoprene, styrene and acrylonitrile is applied to the surface of the leather. The coating with elastomer-based substances gives the leather characteristics of waterproofing, elasticity, mechanical resistance, however these characteristics are linked to the integrity and uniformity of the surface coating layer.

These and other features and advantages of the process of the invention will be more easily understood from the following description of specific, non-limiting examples of implementation.
Esempio 1 Example 1
A load of leathers destined for the production of leathers suitable for being finished by painting processes, consisting of 100 kg of shaved weight of 1⁄2 full-grain calves, with a thickness of about 1 mm, which have been tanned with chrome tanning and retanned with synthetic tannins, acrylic resins and synthetic fatliquors, they are subjected in the drum to the further post-tanning treatments specified below.
A first washing operation is carried out by introducing into the drum a chemical bath consisting of a mixture of 600 kg of water at 30 ° C and 0.5 kg of ammonia in a 30% aqueous solution, and keeping the hides in this environment for about 30 minutes, after which the skins are drained, a washing cycle is performed with 200 kg of water and the skins are drained again for about 5 minutes.

A fattening operation is then performed by introducing 100 kg of water at 30 ° C and 4 kg of a chemical product for synthetic polymer fattening. After 30 minutes of treatment, a further 12 kg of chemical products for fattening, both synthetic and natural, including natural sulphites, are added for a treatment period of a further 90 minutes. Finally 1 kg of acetic acid is added with which the treatment continues for a further 30 minutes, after which the skins are drained and washed with 300 kg of water.
Subsequently, a dyeing operation is carried out by adding acid dyes to the chemical bath and maintaining it for about 30 minutes.
Several washing cycles are then carried out lasting 5 minutes each with 300 kg of water at 30 ° C until the hides are brought back to a pH higher than 4.5.
A 10-minute retanning operation is then performed with a chemical bath consisting of 50 kg of water at 30 ° C and 4 kg of an aldehyde retanning agent.
Subsequently, in the same treatment environment, the gumming operation is performed by adding 24 kg of an elastomeric copolymer and maintaining the treatment environment for 20 minutes, after which 100 kg of water at 50 ° C and 3 kg of formic acid are added. for a further duration of the operation of 5 minutes, at the end of which the skins are drained.
A further dyeing operation is then performed by adding 2 kg of an acid dye and maintaining it for 10 minutes and then adding 2 kg of formic acid and maintaining it for a further 30 minutes, after which the hides are drained and washed.
Finally, a further fattening operation is performed by introducing 200 kg of water at 50 ° C and 4 kg of a natural sulphited product for fattening, and keeping the hides in this treatment environment for about 60 minutes, after which they are drained. Then 100 kg of water at 50 ° C and 1 kg of formic acid are introduced again, for a duration of 60 minutes.
At the end the hides are drained and washed with 300 kg of water and the drying operation is then performed which takes place in an environment at a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure, keeping the hides at a temperature between 40 ° C and 45 ° C up to obtain leathers with absolute humidity with respect to their dry weight not exceeding 30%. Subsequently drying is completed at room temperature up to an absolute humidity value of 12% (measured with a hygrometer).

Esempio 2 Example 2
A load of crust ex wet-blue leathers consisting of 100 kg dry weight of 1⁄2 French nubuck calves, which have been tanned with chrome tanning and retanned with synthetic and vegetable tannins and greased with natural fatliquors, are subjected to drum to the further post-tanning treatments specified below.
A first de-wetting operation is performed by introducing into the drum a chemical bath consisting of a mixture of 600 kg of water at 30 ° C and 0.5 kg of ammonia in a 30% aqueous solution, and keeping the hides in this environment for about 30 minutes, after which the skins are drained, a washing cycle is performed with 200 kg of water and the skins are drained again for about 5 minutes.
A fattening operation is then performed by injecting 100 kg of water at 30 ° C and 6 kg of a mixture of synthetic polymeric fatliquors. After 30 minutes of treatment, a further 25 kg of chemical products for fattening, both synthetic and natural, are added, including, among other things, natural amphoteric and natural sulphated fatliquors, for a treatment period of a further 90 minutes. Finally 1 kg of acetic acid is added with which the treatment continues for a further 30 minutes, after which the skins are drained and washed with 300 kg of water at 30 ° C.
A conventional dyeing operation is then performed.
Several washing cycles are then carried out lasting 5 minutes each with 300 kg of water at 30 ° C until the leathers are brought back to a PH higher than 4.5.
A 10-minute retanning operation is then performed with a chemical bath consisting of 50 kg of water at 30 ° C and 4 kg of an aldehyde retanning agent.
Subsequently, in the same treatment environment, the gumming operation is performed by adding 20 kg of an elastomeric copolymer and maintaining the treatment environment for 30 minutes, after which 100 kg of water at 50 ° C and 3 kg of formic acid are added. for a further duration of the operation of 10 minutes, at the end of which the skins are drained.
Finally, a final chemical operation is performed by injecting 100 kg of water at 50 ° C and 1 kg of formic acid, for a duration of 60 minutes.
At this point, the hides obtained can optionally be subjected to the desired finishing operations.
The advantages deriving from the inclusion of the gumming process of the invention in the tanning process as described above, are immediately evident in the following tables 2.1 and 2.2 in which a comparison is made between the values of certain technical characteristics of a leather tanned starting from seeds finished wet-blue produced according to a conventional tanning process and a leather produced for the same purpose but which has undergone the gumming process of the invention according to the example reported above.

The tables immediately show an average increase of about 30% of the aforementioned values.
Obviously, the processes described above are only exemplary and not limitative and a gumming process according to the present invention, as well as the tanning process of which it forms part, can also be considerably different.
In fact, the hides that, during the tanning process, can be subjected to the gumming process described above can derive from any species of terrestrial, marine, amphibious or volatile animal and the tanning process is optimized according to the type of leather to be treated and the aesthetic and functional characteristics of the leather to be obtained which, from time to time, may be suitable for making small and large leather goods, footwear, uppers and soles for footwear, clothing, furniture, fur, bookbinding, technical articles, saddlery, upholstery and more still.
The gumming process is advantageously implemented by means of tannery drums within which the correct chemical treatment environment can be created and which at the same time are able to exert a mechanical action on the hides. However, the gumming process could also alternatively be carried out in other wet phase machines such as stationary tanks, reels, washing machines, mixers or other suitable containers.
The elastomers used can be natural or synthetic. Among the natural ones, for example tragacanth, gum arabic and natural latex can be used. Among the synthetic ones can be used, for example, diene polymers and copolymers, polymers of isoprene, polybutadiene, styrene, nitrile rubber, butadienevinylpyridine copolymers, polymers of chloro-butadiene (neoprene), polymers and copolymers of monoolefins, polymers of isobutylene, elastomers from polyethylene, elastomers from fluoroolefins, acrylic elastomers, polymers and copolymers of ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, polymers of fluoracrylates, polysulphide rubbers, polyester rubbers, silicone rubbers, synthetic latexes, styrene polymer-based rubbers butadiene carboxylates, latex butadiene methacrylate carboxylase, butadiene acrylate carboxylase latexes.
The elastomers listed above, soluble or solubilized in water, are used individually or in mixture, with each other or with other types of products.
Referring to the classification of elastomers according to DIN / ISO 1629, elastomers or mixtures of elastomers of group M are advantageously used as they give the leathers particular qualities of resistance.
Alternatively, elastomers or blends of synthetic elastomers of the R group are used. In general, the synthetic elastomers of this group give the leathers characteristics of compactness.
Still alternatively, natural elastomers of the R group are used. In general, the natural elastomers of this group make the leathers more velvety and natural to the touch.
Still alternatively, elastomers or blends of elastomers of the Q group are used as they confer particular softness effects.
Among the aforementioned, neoprene and acrylo-nitrile elastomers are not used in the rubberizing process of the invention as they have a low elastic yield.
Preferably, the gumming process takes place simultaneously or in succession to retanning, dyeing or fatliquoring processes. However, the process of the invention could also be performed simultaneously or in succession to one or more of the shore operations, or even simultaneously or in succession to the tanning, deacidifying or fixation operation. In any case, it is advantageous that, at the time of adding the elastomer, the treatment environment is anionic with an initial alkaline pH with respect to the isoelectric point of the skin and that, after a certain treatment period, preferably of a minimum duration of 15 minutes, the pH is made acidic (again with reference to the isoelectric point of the skin), for example by adding acids such as formic, acetic, or other preferably short-chain organic acids. In such conditions, the penetration of the elastomer into the dermis of the skins is initially favored and subsequently its fixation and exhaustion.
The minimum quantities of elastomers (referred to their dry weight) used in the rubberizing process of the invention, referred to the weight of the hides, are equal to 0.1% with respect to the fresh salted weight, or 0.5% with respect to the wet shaved weight. , or at 1% with respect to the dry weight. Obviously, much greater quantities of elastomers can be used than those indicated according to the characteristics that one wishes to give to the leather. For example, particularly appreciable characteristics of leathers are obtained with quantities of elastomers equal to 1% with respect to the fresh salted weight, or 5% with respect to the wet shaved weight, or 10% with respect to the dry weight.
The hides are kept in a chemical bath containing elastomers for a period of time which is a function of the desired article and preferably of at least 5 minutes. This allows sufficient penetration of the elastomers into the innermost inner layers of the skin. However, the concentration of elastomers in the chemical bath and the duration of the treatment vary according to the type of product required and / or desired.
The gumming process can be performed, always in the wet phase, even after the finishing operations. Above all in this case it is particularly advantageous to follow the gumming process with drying operations which take place in a conditioned environment at a temperature and / or pressure higher than the environmental ones. In particular, drying can advantageously take place using vacuum drying machines or ovens.
The leathers that have been subjected to the rubberizing process are consistent, elastic, rubbery, have excellent high definition printability, have excellent characteristics of resistance to tearing, and to breakage of the grain and better mechanical resistance in general, better resistance to high temperatures and pressures, better resistance to water absorption and color fading. The leathers for smooth articles appear with an adherent and not blown grain; leathers with tumbled grain are characterized by acquiring a very full and natural appearance. Also, hides processed on the flesh side (or splits) have a particular lock of fiber and compactness.
The advantages of a process according to the invention remain unaffected even in the presence of further variations or modifications, made while still remaining within the scope of protection defined by the following claims.
