Contemporaneamente alla produzione di lavoro una certa quantità di gas si trasferisce dal contenitore caldo a quello freddo determinando una diminuzione di pressione nel serbatoio caldo. Quando la differenza di pressione nei gas contenuti nei due serbatoi non sarà più sufficiente a produrre lavoro (1a fase ) si invertono le temperature dei gas nei due contenitori e si utilizza il gas caldo per continuare il ciclo lavorativo (2a fase).
