DESCRIZIONE DESCRIPTION
dell’invenzione avente per titolo: of the invention entitled:
“SISTEMA DI DISPOSIZIONI DIFFERENZIATE "SYSTEM OF DIFFERENTIATED ARRANGEMENTS
DEI TASTI SUL MANICO DEI LIUTI” OF THE KEYS ON THE LUTE HANDLE "
PREMESSA PREMISE
The traditional arrangement of the frets on the neck of all instruments in the lute category generates identical chromatic sequences for all strings, by virtue of the inverse proportionality relationship, which links frequencies and lengths of the vibrating string segments.
The temperaments that can generate equal chromatic scales are "equal" ones and, under certain conditions, which make them impossible for this category of instruments, even those particular irregular temperaments that involve the subdivision of the octave into equal groups of different semitones. For these latter temperaments, the number of strings, differently tuned, must not exceed that of the groups and their tuning is subject to the particular subdivision of the octave. An example is given to clarify the concept (see fig.l - the measurements are expressed in CENTS):
un’ottava è suddivisa in 4 gruppi uguali di 3 semitoni diversi: Si, S2, S3(con Si+ S2+ S3= 300)<1>; se si vogliono ottenere scale cromatiche uguali, occorre limitare a 4 il numero massimo delle corde da affiancare a quella principale<2>, e accordarle nel modo seguente: an octave is divided into 4 equal groups of 3 different semitones: Si, S2, S3 (with Si + S2 + S3 = 300) <1>; if you want to obtain the same chromatic scales, you must limit the maximum number of strings to be placed next to the main one <2> to 4, and tune them as follows:
DO (0), Mib (300), FA# (600), LA (900), DOi (1200). DO (0), Eb (300), F # (600), A (900), DOi (1200).
In conclusion, it can be said that only regular temperaments are compatible with the traditional arrangement of the keys.
A piece of music composed in an unequal scale is therefore distorted if performed with these instruments. If one tried, with a system of moving keys, to apply a particular unequal temperament, what anomalies would arise?
For a single string (the main one) it is certainly possible to determine the arrangement of the frets linked to the chromatic scale having as fundamental the note to which the string itself is tuned. A second string, differently tuned, placed next to it, is forced to produce the same chromatic sequence: in this case it is possible to demonstrate that there is at least one pair of frets that generate two notes of the same name with different pitches.
As the number of strings increases (with different intonations) the number of anomalies increases. By subsequently moving the keys to a compensating position, you can only perform an interpolation of the sounds.
MAZZA (which will be illustrated later), which has 2 semitones of different cut within an octave, and the related graphic scheme of the 12 chromatic scales, shown in Fig. 2. From it you can extract a second diagram (fig.3) <3> with 6 scales, the fundamentals of which correspond to the classical guitar tuning:
MI - LA - RE] - SOLi - Sii - M2(dal basso verso l’acuto). MI - A - RE] - SOLi - Be - M2 (from bottom to top).
Having chosen the VI string as the main <4>, if we examine the pair of scales with E and A fundamentals, we can see how the D] emitted on the 5th fret by the V string has a lower frequency than the (true) one of the same note emitted on the 10th fret by the 6th string, with a difference equal to that of the two semitones of the scale.
The notes A2, F2, D02, emitted on the 10th fret respectively by the strings II, III, IV, etc. are higher by an equal quantity.
NOVITÀ’ DEL PROGETTO NEWS OF THE PROJECT
It is clear that if you want to build an instrument that can allow the performance of a piece composed in a different scale than the "equal tempered" one, it is necessary to abandon the traditional neck feeler system. With reference to a particular irregular temperament, if different chromatic scales can be associated with strings, with different intonations, it is necessary to make each of them correspond to a specific sequence of frets: each string must be considered, that is, as a monochord that requires a probing linked to one's own intonation.
The traditional continuous fret is therefore divided into as many parts as there are strings. It should be noted, however, that when the contiguous parts occur at the same distance from the nut, it is possible to merge them into a single piece.
This innovative system of independent feel of the neck involves, for what has been said, the fragmentation of a certain number of frets. It is advisable to draw up a graphic scheme of the chromatic scales to be created, in order to facilitate the calculation of the positions of the keys and to immediately locate their points of discontinuity.
It could be shown that these points and their spatial distribution depend on the chosen temperament, the number of strings and their pitch.
2 e 3. By way of example, reference can be made again to the diagrams shown in figs. 2 and 3.
At this point it is natural to wonder if a neck so felt does not offer technical difficulties of execution.
To give an answer, it is first of all necessary to note that the amplitude of the deviations between contiguous (non-aligned) key sections depends on the length of the tuning fork, the difference in the amplitude of the semitones and the neck area in which they are placed. In this respect, the following options are privileged, to the benefit of the executor:
- Diapason non molti lunghi; - Not very long tuning forks;
- Scale che presentano pochi semitoni di taglio diverso con piccole differenze d’ampiezza; - Scales that have a few semitones of different cuts with small differences in amplitude;
- Solutions that lead to placing the fragmented keys as far away from the nut, in the areas where the deviations are reduced for the same musical interval (an example will be given below).
It should be noted that this constructive system does not allow any variation: the instrument is rigidly linked to a single musical temperament and a single tuning. For example, with reference to the various historical musical temperaments, one could build VALLOTTI, MESOTONICI, WERCKMEISTER, KIRNBERGER instruments, etc.
It can only be accompanied by instruments with variable pitch, such as, for example, by string instruments, by a harpsichord tuned in the same scale, by the human voice, etc.
FINALITÀ’ DEL PROGETTO PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The idea of the project was born to meet the needs of all those who, not satisfied with the musical compromise that characterizes the equalized tempered scale, love to listen (or perform) the pieces composed in the various historical periods with the scales of the era, without those sound anomalies that would arise with any instrument, if you wanted to feel it in the traditional way based on those scales

FORMULE (a) FORMULAS (a)
The numerical values shown in the table are the Pythagorean ones and, therefore, it is possible to state the following rule: for any musical temperament, if reference is made to the sequence of 12 reduced fifths, the value of the relative frequency of a note is equal to the Pythagorean one. decreased by the sum of all the reductions between the C and the note, if it is to the right of the C, increased if to the left.
The nominal tuning fork is the theoretical reference length for calculating the positions of the frets: it coincides with the distance between the nut and a hypothetical bridge parallel to it.
c) Le formule proposte dall’Ing. The formulas proposed by Eng. HAMMER for the calculation of the key positions are:
FORMULE (c) FORMULAS (c)
Il significato dei simboli è il seguente: The meaning of the symbols is as follows:
d„ = distanza nominale dell’ennesimo tasto dal ponticello (essa subisce una variazione allorché si va a correggere la posizione del ponticello); d "= nominal distance of the nth key from the jumper (it undergoes a variation when the jumper position is corrected);
de= la sua distanza effettiva dal capotasto (rimane costante); de = its effective distance from the nut (remains constant);
do= diapason nominale; do = nominal tuning fork;
= prodotto dei primi n semitoni. = product of the first n semitones.
The position of each bridge is corrected separately to compensate for the frequency variations caused both by the lowering of the strings on the frets, both by their elastic constant (in this case negligible because the strings are not metallic), and by some geometric irregularity: in this way a greater precision of the sounds is obtained, especially in the area of the keyboard closest to the jumpers.
The position of each bridge is fixed when the frequency of the second harmonic, produced by the vibration of the string touched with a finger at its midpoint, coincides with that of the sound emitted by the same if it is pressed on the 12th fret. For this purpose it is best to use an electronic frequency meter.
Si ricorda che la relazione che lega un parametro frazionario (r) e l’equivalente logaritmico (c) è: 5- Obviously, a previous transformation of the logarithmic values (CENTS) into fractional (and therefore decimal) values is necessary, in order to set the calculation of the positions. Remember that the relationship that binds a fractional parameter (r) and the logarithmic equivalent (c) is:
r— 2<c/1200>r— 2 <c / 1200>

COSTRUZIONE DI DUE PROTOTIPI DI CHITARRA CONSTRUCTION OF TWO GUITAR PROTOTYPES
L’Ing. Eng. MAZZA personally built the two tools with normal household tools, using poor materials.
The aim pursued was not, therefore, that of the timbre quality and aesthetic form, conditioned by the insufficiency of the means used, but that of the practical confirmation of his studies and his theories on the physics of vibrating strings and string instruments, on sounds. harmonics, musical temperaments, etc.
The results obtained can be considered fully satisfactory: the precision of the sounds over the entire range of the keyboard, which can also be found with electronic measurements, their color and the nuances in the passage from one tone to another, deriving from the use of a musical temperament. not regular, they involve the sensitive listener and, in comparison, highlight the limits of the uniform melodic expressiveness characterizing the equalized temperament.

SEQUENZA DEGLI INTERVENTI OPERATIVI EFFETTUATI SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONAL INTERVENTIONS CARRIED OUT
- Scelta del temperamento musicale “MAZZA”; - Choice of the musical temperament "MAZZA";
- Scelta del numero delle corde: n = 6; - Choice of the number of strings: n = 6;
- Scelta degli intervalli di accordatura (dal basso verso l’acuto): 4<a>- 4<a>- 4<a>- 3<a>maggiore - 4<a>; - Choice of tuning intervals (from low to high): 4 <a> - 4 <a> - 4 <a> - 3 <a> major - 4 <a>;
- Scelta del diapason nominale: do = 620 mm; - Choice of nominal tuning fork: do = 620 mm;
- Calcolo delle frequenze relative e dei semitoni con le formule (a); - Calculation of relative frequencies and semitones with formulas (a);
- Elaborazione dello schema grafico (fig.2); - Elaboration of the graphic scheme (fig. 2);
- Scelta dell’accordatura (dal basso verso l’acuto): MI - LA - REi - SOLi - Sii - MI2; - Choice of tuning (from bottom to top): MI - A - REi - SOLi - Si - MI2;
- Minimizzazione della frammentazione dei tasti: - Minimization of key fragmentation:
osservando lo schema di fig.3, si nota come nell’ambito di un’ottava tutti i tasti risultano frammentati, con l’eccezione del capotasto e del 12° tasto. Facendo traslare verso il ponticello le due sequenze centrali di tasti (III e IV corda) di una quantità corrispondente alla differenza dei due semitoni, si trova la soluzione ottimale (fig.5); observing the diagram in fig. 3, you can see how within an octave all the keys are fragmented, with the exception of the nut and the 12th fret. By translating the two central sequences of frets (III and IV string) towards the bridge by an amount corresponding to the difference of the two semitones, the optimal solution is found (fig. 5);
- Addition of a 7 <a> probing for a string tuned to the D (one tone below the E string), so that the 6th string can be tuned to the E or, alternatively, to the D when needed.
- Calculation of the positions of the frets for each single string with formulas (c). The results in mm are shown in figs. 8 and 9, in which the nominal distances from the bridge are indicated on the left, on the right the actual distances from the nut.
- Sequence of 17 frets per string, in addition to the nut.
- Correzione della posizione dei ponticelli. - Correction of the position of the jumpers.
At the end of the description, it was considered appropriate to report, as the main drawing, the two figs. a, b because each of them includes the main points to be claimed.
Fig. a relates to the handle of the 1st prototype, fig. b to that of the 2nd.
On each of the two frets are indicated with Arabic numerals up to 12 (0 indicates the nut), with Roman numerals the strings. The scale for the y axis is: = 1: 2.
