Descrizione Description
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of aromatic dicarbamates by reaction of an organic carbonate and an aromatic diamine in the presence of a carbamoylation catalyst, where said catalyst is an organo-phosphoric acid of general formula (I).
Carbamates in general and dicarbamates in particular constitute valuable intermediates useful for the production of pesticides, dyes, pharmaceutical compounds and aromatic isocyanates used in the preparation of polyurethanes. In particular, among the isocyanates those of greatest interest, from a commercial point of view, are toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) which are currently industrially produced by phosgenation of the corresponding diamines.
Various processes are known for the preparation of carbamates by reacting a carbonate and an aromatic amine in the presence of a Lewis acid-like catalyst.
Thus, for example, US patent 3,763,217 describes the preparation of carbamates by reaction, under reflux conditions, of an alkyl carbonate with an aromatic amine, in the presence of a Lewis acid, preferably uranyl nitrate. The amount of Lewis acid used can vary from 0.1 to 10% and, preferably, from 0.5 to 1.0% by moles on the amine. Under these conditions the conversion and selectivity yields of the carbamate are of the order of 20%.
US patent 4,268,683 describes the preparation of mono- and dicarbamates by reaction of an alkyl carbonate and an aromatic mono- or diamine, using as Lewis acid a compound of Sn (II) or Zn (II), such as for example halides or salts of monovalent organic acids with pKa equal to or greater than 2.8. By operating, for example, in the presence of 1% by moles of catalyst on the amine, conversion and selectivity yields of the mono-carbamate of the order of 77% are obtained. Operating according to these known processes, when Lewis acid is used with a low molar ratio with respect to the amine, consistent quantities of the urea by-product are inevitably formed, even in the presence of high molar ratios between carbonate and aromatic amine. Therefore, obtaining carbamates with good yields implies the need to operate with high catalyst contents, which is disadvantageous from an economic point of view and from the separation and purification treatments of the final products.
A simple and convenient process has now been found which allows the preparation of dicarbamates from carbonates and aromatic diamines, with practically complete yields and selectivity in the useful reaction product using an organo-phosphoric acid as catalyst.
I) In accordance with this, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of aromatic carbamates by reaction of an organic carbonate with an aromatic diamine operating in the presence of a catalyst, characterized in that said catalyst is an organo-phosphoric acid of general formula (I )
(I) (THE)
dove: R è un residuo alchilico C1-C1, arilico o 0R4 dove R„ è un residuo alchilico C1-C1 o arilico ed ; n e x diversi tra loro sono 1 o 2. where: R is a C1-C1, aryl or 0R4 alkyl residue where R? is a C1-C1 or aryl alkyl residue and; n and x different from each other are 1 or 2.
Organic carbonates which can be employed in the process of the present invention include alkyl, ary or alkyl ary esters of carbonic acid. The ester group can be an alkyl group with a number of carbon atoms up to 12, preferably up to 6, or an aryic group with a number of carbon atoms up to 10. Examples of organic carbonates particularly suitable in the process of the present invention are for example diphenyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, dipropyl carbonate, dibutyl carbonate, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, styrene carbonate, diisopropyl carbonate, dixyl carbonate, methyl butyl carbonate and methyl phenyl carbonate. Particularly preferred are diphenyl carbonate (DFC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Organic carbonates can be prepared using conventional methods.
Diammine aromatiche utili nel procedimento della presente invenzione includono quelle rappresentate dalle seguenti formule. Aromatic diamines useful in the process of the present invention include those represented by the following formulas.
dove: R è idrogeno, un alogeno, od un gruppo idrocarbile o idrocarbilossi con un numero di atomi di carbonio sino a 8, preferibilmente sino a 4, A è un gruppo idrocarburico divalente con un numero di atomi di carbonio da 1 a 6, preferibilmente da 1 a 4, n ha valore 0 o 1 e x assume un valore compreso tra 1 e 6, preferibilmente tra 2 e 4. where: R is hydrogen, a halogen, or a hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyloxy group with a number of carbon atoms up to 8, preferably up to 4, A is a divalent hydrocarbon group with a number of carbon atoms from 1 to 6, preferably from 1 to 4, n has a value of 0 or 1 and x takes a value of between 1 and 6, preferably between 2 and 4.
Examples of aromatic amines particularly useful in the process of the present invention are 4,4'-methylenedianiline, 2,4 '-diaminotoluene, 2,6' -diaminotoluene or mixtures of the two isomers 2,4 'and 2,6'.
The carbonate and the amine are made to interact in an organic solvent in the presence of the catalyst (I) to produce the desired aromatic dicarbamate.
Organic solvents suitable for the purposes of the present invention are selected from tetrahydrofuran, alkyl ethers, alcohols, phenols or substituted phenols or the organic carbonate itself.
To obtain a complete conversion of the diamine to dicarbamate, the carbonate must be present in a stoichiometric ratio, with respect to the amino groups to be converted, at least equivalent. Generally it is preferable to use the carbonate in excess over the amine to minimize side reactions. Advantageously, a molar ratio between carbonate and diamine comprised between 2/1 and 50/1, preferably between 2/1 and 20/1, is used.
The quantity of catalyst used in the reaction can vary between 0.5 and 20% by moles, preferably between 1 and 10% by moles, per mole of diamine.
The reaction temperatures can conveniently vary from 40 ° to 150 ° C. Temperatures lower than the first indicated limit can be used, but they are disadvantageous due to the low reaction rate, while temperatures higher than the second indicated limit are disadvantageous as they favor the formation of reaction by-products. Preferably, temperatures ranging from 50 ° to 120 ° C will be used. By operating under the conditions described above, a complete conversion of the diamine is generally carried out in times of the order of 4-13 hours.
The carbamoylation reaction can be carried out in batch, continuous or semi-continuous in a nitrogen atmosphere.
The isolation and purification of the dicarbamates obtained with the process of the present invention can be carried out by conventional techniques such as extraction, crystallization, distillation or column chromatography. The isolated carbamates have no phosphorus-based impurities.
The process of the present invention basically allows the advantage of transforming the diamine into the relative dicarbamate with practically quantitative yields, using reduced quantities of the catalyst and mild operating conditions. There are evident benefits as regards the economy of the process, including the improvement of the consumption specifications of the catalyst and of the amine.
The experimental examples which follow are illustrative and not limitative of the present invention.
Esempio 1 Example 1
