â € œMethod for chemical analysis of elements in metal alloysâ €.
DESCRIZIONE DESCRIPTION
Campo dell’invenzione Field of invention
The present invention refers to a method for the chemical analysis of elements in metal alloys.
Stato dell’arte. State of the art.
The most common instrumental techniques for the chemical analysis of metallic materials are the optical emission spectrometry of the OES-Spark type and the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. These techniques allow to carry out the analysis directly on the surfaces of the samples; however, these techniques have some disadvantages such as, for example, low precision and accuracy of the values obtained which are negatively influenced by the presence of different metal phases (such as austenite and martensite), by the presence of segregations (primary silicon in aluminum alloys), by metallographic structure, by self-absorption effects (especially in the OES-Spark technique), and / or by strong interelementary interferences.
In addition, these techniques have the further disadvantage of not being usable for the analysis of small samples or with non-flat surfaces and the calibration of the instruments can only take place with the use of secondary standards (certified international standards or secondary standards of internal production).
The inductively coupled plasma type optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) allows to overcome many of these disadvantages by operating on the sample dissolved in acid or in acid mixtures. Primary standards can be used for calibration, obtained from chemically pure substances or with impurities of known entity and with precise characteristics, such as stability, non-hygroscopicity, easy solubility, etc ... The international standards obtained from interlaboratory circuits - secondary standards - in the case of ICP, they are used only as a calibration check. In this way, the ICP-OES technique turns out to be very reliable and accurate.
However, with this technique it is not always possible to obtain a complete dissolution, for example, in the case of particular inclusions and intermetallic phases. Furthermore, the precision and accuracy at high concentrations are not satisfactory.
As far as sample preparation is concerned, a significant improvement in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was obtained in the 1950s with the use of the borax bead technique, in which the sample in powder it is mixed with a borate-based flux and melted at a temperature above 1000 ° C. Cast on a platinum saucer, it is presented in the form of a glassy disc that can be analyzed by XRF.
This method has allowed to obtain excellent results with minerals, slags, powders, cements, etc. The preparation of the sample in this form, in fact, is characterized by many advantages, such as, for example, the absence of differences linked to the presence of different phases, high homogeneity of the matrix, complete dissolution of the inclusions.
HNO3per leghe ferro-vanadio) seguita dall’essicazione su bagno d’aria. In this way, therefore, the potential of the XRF technique is greatly improved. However, since only the oxides are soluble in the flux, the metals must be oxidized beforehand before melting. For this purpose, solid oxidants can be used, such as V2O5, NaNO3, Sr (NO3) 2, Na2CO3, Na2O2, directly in the crucible together with the flux, or it is possible to proceed with a preventive oxidation in acid (e.g. HNO3 for iron alloys -vanadio) followed by drying in an air bath.
However, the holder of this application has found that at present some metal alloys cannot be broken down by this method for three main reasons: a) due to the nature of these samples it is not possible to obtain a fine powder, which does not allow the Use of solid oxidants during melting, as contact and mixing necessary for the initiation of the oxidation reaction are precluded; the non-oxidized metal degrades the crucible to platinum; b) preventive oxidation in solution is possible, but the use of acid mixtures (such as, for example, sulfuric, perchloric, phosphoric acid ...) precludes the next phase, as the residues of dissolution prevent vitrification of the pearl; and c) hydrochloric acid, which would represent the solvent by exception for stainless steels, is highly corrosive towards platinum. Furthermore, the removal of chlorides before melting is not conceivable, since the latter, unlike bromides and iodides, require oxidizing conditions that are too extreme to be removed as molecular chlorine.
To date, therefore, the technical problem of creating a method for the chemical analysis of elements present in metal alloys that allows for improved precision and accuracy, particularly in the high concentration range, is particularly felt.

The use of this type of oxidant allows to obtain advantages in the subsequent spectral analysis, as there is a better stabilization of the matrix constituted by the solid solution of the oxides in the lattice of the borates due to the fact that this oxidant is a strong absorbent radiation and stabilizes the absorption coefficient of the glassy material, making the differences in concentration between different samples negligible.

Esempio 1 (invenzione). Example 1 (invention).
A 0.2 g portion of the 2 mm chip stainless steel sample was dissolved at room temperature in a glass container with a mixture of bromine and methanol containing 10% bromine. After allowing the mixture to rest for a period of 5 hours, the container was heated on a plate to allow the liquid to evaporate. The residue, taken up with water, was added with concentrated HNO3 until total oxidation and elimination of the bromine. The released vapors were collected by suction with a water pump and neutralized by bubbling in a series of two traps containing a sodium thiosulfate solution.
The remaining solution, free of bromine, was transferred quantitatively in a platinum crucible and proceeded to complete drying in an air bath. Any undissolved residues in the glass container were disintegrated with concentrated HNO3 and subsequently transferred to the crucible.
The dry residue was added with 0.4 grams of barium nitrate and 8.0 grams of a 50:50 weight / weight mixture of lithium tetraborate and lithium metaborate.
The mixture of borates was melted in an induction beading machine at a temperature of 1300 ° C for 5 minutes and poured into a platinum saucer. The sample thus obtained, having the shape of a glassy pearl, was analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The calibration standards were obtained using pure metal oxides.
Esempio 2 (confronto) The method of the present invention allowed to determine the chemical analysis of the main elements present in the analyzed sample, in this case Ni, Cr, Mn, Mo. Example 2 (comparison)
A portion of sample such as that of example 1 was dissolved at room temperature in a glass container using a mixture of HCl and HNO3, instead of the mixture of bromine and methanol of example 1 of the invention, and transferred to a crucible of platinum. With this type of treatment, it was not possible to analyze the sample as the dissolution by acid oxidation of the sample caused the destruction of the platinum crucible for the formation of Cl2 during oxidation.
Esempio 3 (confronto) Example 3 (comparison)
A portion of the sample was treated with a mixture of HCl and HNO3 as in example 2. To obviate the destruction of the platinum crucible caused by the formation of Cl2 during oxidation, before the transfer of the solution to the platinum crucible was carried out, precipitation of the solid with ammonia, filtration and removal of the residual chloride with water.
However, in this case, there was a loss of the sample to be analyzed.
Esempio 4 (confronto) Example 4 (comparison)
A portion of the sample was treated as in example 2, using other acids (H2SO4, HClO4, H3PO4, HF) instead of the mixture of HCl and HNO3, with the obtaining of an undesired permanence of residues which prevented the formation of glassy pearl.
Esempio 5 (confronto) Example 5 (comparison)
A portion of the sample was treated as in example 2, using hydrobromic acid (HBr) instead of the mixture of HCl and HNO3, with the result that the sample was not affected at all.
Esempio 6 (confronto) Example 6 (comparison)
Esempio 7 (confronto) A portion of the sample was treated as in example 2, using solid oxidants (V2O5, Sr (NO3) 2, NaNO3) instead of the mixture of HCl and HNO3, with the result that only a partial oxidation of the sample was obtained due to the failure contact with the oxidant and therefore obtaining a sample to be analyzed only in the form of shavings or flakes. In addition, there was serious damage to the platinum crucible. Example 7 (comparison)
A portion of the sample was treated as in example 1, using a mixture of bromine and ethanol instead of the mixture of bromine and methanol. The attack conditions were too mild and the sample remained intact.
Esempio 8 (confronto) Example 8 (comparison)
A portion of sample as in example 1 was dissolved, using the same mixture of bromine and methanol as in example 1, directly in the platinum crucible to avoid the transfer phase from the glass container to the crucible, without having first eliminated the bromine. Damage to the crucible was obtained due to the corrosive effects of the mixture.
Esempio 9 (confronto) Example 9 (comparison)
A portion of the sample was treated as in example 1, adding only lithium tetraborate to the dry residue instead of the mixture of lithium tetraborate / lithium meta borate. The lithium tetraborate alone was not sufficient for the dissolution of the oxides formed.
Esempio 10 (confronto) Example 10 (comparison)
A portion of the sample was treated as in example 1, adding only lithium metaborate to the dry residue instead of the mixture of lithium tetraborate / lithium meta borate. The metaborate lithium alone led to the crystallization of the pearl, making it unusable for analytical purposes.
From the above examples it is therefore evident that only the method of the present invention (example 1) allowed to chemically analyze the metal alloy sample, while the other comparison methods (examples 2-10), lacking at least one of the characteristics of the method of present invention, presented disadvantages and / or problems such as not to make this chemical analysis possible.
