Descrizione dell'Invenzione Industriale dal titolo: Description of the Industrial Invention entitled:
“PROCEDIMENTO DI RICOTTURA DI MANUFATTI IN MATERIALE CERAMICO E MANUFATTI CON COLORAZIONE SCURA DAL GRIGIO AL NERO COSÌ OTTENUTI", "ANNEALING PROCESS OF CERAMIC MATERIAL PRODUCTS AND PRODUCTS WITH A DARK GRAY TO BLACK COLOR SO OBTAINED",
The present invention relates to the sector of building materials, and in particular it has as its object a process for annealing of ceramic material articles of all white and red clays, already fired with relatively low firing temperatures, and articles with coloring dark gray to black thus obtained, without the addition of dyes.
It is known that the characteristic color of traditional single-fired terracotta tiles is red in its various shades. Responsible for this color are the trivalent iron oxides, mostly formed during cooking in the oven at about 1000 ° C.
The Italian patent n ° 1278693 in the name, among others, of one of the applicants, describes a process in which for the production of a ceramic material with a dark color, from to black, is made from clayey calcareous, ferruginous, siliceous material and the like, which is reduced to the desired forms, dried and then baked in an oven at temperatures between 750 and 1100 ° C in conditions of lack of oxygen.
In particular, according to this procedure, the oxygen deficiency condition is determined by firing the clayey artefact in a container at a certain degree of vacuum, for example between 0.9 and 0.5, or even at atmospheric pressure, with progressive expulsion of the air from the container by the internal gases that are released from the clay during cooking itself.
The lack of oxygen that characterizes the firing environment of the clayey material is responsible for the coloring of the finished product, as it inhibits the formation of trivalent iron oxides favoring instead that of divalent iron oxides, and to the limit of metallic iron, with the characteristic gray coloring. The darkest gray to black of the final product can be obtained by adding organic material, in the form of flours or oils, to compensate for the possible lack of organic substances in the clays so that carbon monoxide develops during cooking. . This, by reducing the availability of oxygen in the cooking environment due to the oxidation of the iron present in the starting material, affects the coloring. The gray terracotta obtained with the aforementioned process also has mechanical and technological characteristics superior to those of red terracotta.
A process has now surprisingly been discovered which allows to obtain ceramic material with a dark color, from gray to black, starting from ceramic material already fired, the process without causing any decay of the mechanical and technological properties of the material itself.
According to a main characteristic of this process, the manufactured articles in already fired ceramic material are annealed at temperatures between 600 and 1100 ° C in conditions of lack of oxygen. To limit the availability of oxygen in the cooking environment, the presence of organic material is envisaged, and in particular of mineral, animal or synthetic oils and organic flours.
In this way the trivalent iron oxides are reduced to divalent iron oxides and, at the limit, to metallic iron, the coloring of the material consequently turning to gray, without this reaction involving any embrittlement of the material, whose mechanical resistance characteristics are indeed , from tests carried out, substantially equal or even increased with respect to those of the starting material.
According to a preferred embodiment of the process according to the present invention, the articles to be treated, typically in the form of tiles, tiles or tiles for flooring, cladding and building uses in general, are placed in hermetically closed containers of refractory ceramic material, cast iron, iron , stainless steel, equipped with a vent valve, or wrapped with tempera paper. Inside the container are added organic oils, whether mineral, vegetable, animal or synthetic, in quantities that are established on the basis of the mass of material to be treated and in any case not exceeding 10%. It should be noted that the addition of organic substances is in this case essential for the achievement of the result, since the starting material, being already cooked, no longer contains any, except to a completely negligible extent.
The containers are then placed in a traditional artisan or industrial oven, which is heated up to 500-600 ° C. In this phase, that is, before the actual annealing begins, the oxygen present in the container is completely consumed, with the formation of carbon monoxide capable of intervening in the process of changing the color of the articles present.
The temperature is then brought to the operating conditions of between 600 and 1100 ° C. By way of example, in the case of application of the process according to the invention to terracotta articles, the preferred annealing temperature is about 700-800 ° C. However, it should be borne in mind that this temperature can vary according to various parameters such as the mass to be annealed and the time of holding at this temperature, so that the optimal operating conditions for obtaining a certain shade of gray will be from time to time. defined according to criteria well known to those skilled in the art.
Once the maximum temperature has been reached, cooling begins with methods usual in the ceramic sector and at a speed that depends on the volume of the kiln and on the size of the objects and their quantity.
The operating conditions and the equipment envisaged in the process are in any case substantially the same as described in the aforementioned Italian patent, to which reference should therefore be made for further details. Moreover, a particular container, made of ceramic or metal refractory material, formed by a support tray for the material to be cooked and by a bell simply resting, turned upside down, on the tray itself can be advantageously used. The support surface of the tray is covered with a layer of refractory sand so that the gases that progressively develop inside the bell during annealing escape from the bell itself passing between its lower edge and the tray, thanks to the porosity of the interposed sand, burning then outside the container.
The materials that can be the subject of the process according to the present invention are, in addition to clay or other terracotta, ceramic products already cooked in general, including glazed (with crystalline and non-crystalline paints), engobe and non-engobe, porcelain, stoneware and clinker . The latter two materials in particular for their production require first firing temperatures significantly higher than the operative temperatures of the process according to the previous patent, so that their gray color cannot be obtained directly with a single firing, but only by reprocessing already cooked products, however, the strength characteristics of which remain unaltered at the temperatures required for annealing.
The advantages that the process described above offers with respect to that of the aforementioned patent, in which the starting material is raw clayey material, can be substantially summarized in terms of greater cost-effectiveness and flexibility in the management of the materials warehouse. This is because it is possible to program a single basic production of conventional red terracotta, diverting a certain amount of it for conversion into gray terracotta. Fluctuations in the required quantities of the two materials can thus be easily and quickly dealt with, minimizing the amount of material stored.
A gray or black artifact can of course also be obtained from the first firing by adding colored oxides to the starting clay, even if one cannot use a clay rich in iron because otherwise a brown color would be obtained instead of gray or black. With the method according to the invention, however, savings are made both on the use of oxides and on the type of clay, which may be the most common and least expensive. Since the use of coloring oxides is not necessary, there are also fewer pollution problems.
Variations and / or modifications may be made to the annealing process of ceramic material articles according to the present invention, without thereby departing from the protective scope of the invention itself.
