Description
MALTA EPOSSIDICA BICOMPONENTE PER LA POSA E LA SIGILLATTURA DI MATERIALI CERAMICI E DA RIVESTIMENTO, SIA DI TIPO TRADIZIONALE CHE INNOVATIVI, PER INTERNI ED ESTERNI. TWO-COMPONENT EPOXY MORTAR FOR LAYING AND SEALING CERAMIC AND WALL MATERIALS, BOTH TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE, FOR INTERIORS AND EXTERIORS.
DESCRIZIONE DELL'INVENZIONE DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The main objective of the invention is to develop, formulate and obtain a two-component epoxy mortar for laying and sealing ceramic and wall tiles for interiors and exteriors. The mortar in question must, in addition to the traditional colors and the transparent, also have an appropriate white color, with a degree of â € œwhiteâ € established by well-defined color indices, guaranteed and almost invariable over time that does not yellow.
In the current state of technical - scientific knowledge and market availability, it is not possible to obtain a finished material with all the characteristics specified below:
1) rispettare i requisiti di resistenza meccanica e di tenuta dei materiali di posa, mediante l’individuazione correlativa dei parametri chimico-fisici costitutivi, requisiti definite dalle norme EN 13888 (Classe: RG – per gli stucchi reattivi) ed EN 12004 (Classe: R2T – per gli adesivi reattivi), 1) comply with the mechanical resistance and sealing requirements of the laying materials, through the correlative identification of the chemical-physical constituent parameters, requirements defined by the standards EN 13888 (Class: RG - for reactive fillers) and EN 12004 (Class: R2T - for reactive adhesives),
2) l’applicazione del prodotto per la posa in opera dei materiali da rivestimento, e la pulizia meccanica dei residui di sbavo dalle fughe, lasciano residui ed aloni; pertanto, la pulizia post-posa in opera dei manufatti dovrà essere possibile con un unico passaggio senza lasciare residui di materiale disperso in aloni, contrariamente a quanto si osserva rispetto ai comuni prodotti esistenti e reperibili sul mercato, sia di tipo cementizio che di tipo epossidico; 2) the application of the product for the laying of the covering materials, and the mechanical cleaning of the deburring residues from the joints, leave residues and halos; therefore, the post-installation cleaning of the artifacts must be possible with a single pass without leaving residues of material dispersed in halos, contrary to what is observed with respect to common existing products available on the market, both cement and epoxy type ;
3) presentare caratteristiche di elevata resistenza agli acidi, agli alcali, ed ai prodotti chimici comunemente utilizzati per la detergenza, la sanitizzazione, e la pulizia in generale (in conformità a quanto stabilito nelle norme UNI-EN-12808-1 “Determinazione della resistenza chimica di malte reattive con resina†); 3) have characteristics of high resistance to acids, alkalis, and chemical products commonly used for detergency, sanitization, and cleaning in general (in compliance with the provisions of the UNI-EN-12808-1 standards - Determination of chemical resistance of reactive mortars with resin⠀);
4) resistance to â € œagingâ € phenomena, mainly induced by solar radiation (and electromagnetic radiation in general), and exposure to natural weather-climatic phenomena.
Therefore, the development of a new two-component epoxy mortar represents the invention of a new chemical formulation that makes it particularly valuable to use, as:
1) impedisce l’attivazione fotochimica del materiale in posa; 1) prevents the photochemical activation of the material being laid;
2) impedisce la ulteriore reticolazione delle resine epossidiche parzialmente insature anche a distanze temporali decisamente lunghe (superiori a tre anni); 2) prevents further crosslinking of partially unsaturated epoxy resins even at decidedly long time distances (over three years);
3) impedisce la retro-degradazione (per effetto di attività ossidative superiori) di materiali destabilizzanti, per effetto di dilavamento acido, per contatto accidentale o sistematico con ossidi di azoto (NOx) e ossidi di zolfo (SOx), per contatto con soluzioni e sospensioni aeriformi saline, ecc.; 3) prevents the retro-degradation (due to higher oxidative activities) of destabilizing materials, due to acid washout, by accidental or systematic contact with nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx), by contact with solutions and saline gaseous suspensions, etc .;
4) it allows to increase the mechanical and thermodynamic stability of the manufactured articles, improving the chemical and physical resistance to thermal excursions and stresses.
The invention consists in the development of industrial formulations for epoxy mortars for laying and sealing with characteristics of both permanent â € œwhiteâ € and permanent colored and transparent, also for laying under conditions of luminous and thermal stress. , and different weather-climatic conditions, and whose post-installation cleaning of the artifacts must be possible with a single pass without leaving residues of material dispersed in halos. To achieve these purposes, it is necessary to alter and modify the basic formulations quite substantially in order to guarantee, to the world of users of these materials, the best performances in terms of quantum yields and product performances due to chemical-physical stability ( inalterability over time). The effects of time on similar sealing mortars on the market today manifest themselves as a gradual and progressive increase in photochromism induced by the yellowing of the material: our invention eliminates this problem.
Inoltre, perché risulti idonea per la produzione del formulato oggetto dell’invenzione, deve necessariamente possedere le seguenti caratteristiche: Patent application WO 2008/012641 in the name of the same Applicant describes white colored epoxy mortars in which inert fillers based on quartz silica are used in order to develop suitable resistance characteristics to both acids and alkalis. Furthermore, in order for it to be suitable for the production of the formulation object of the invention, it must necessarily possess the following characteristics:

The compound, namely the epoxy mortar, object of the present invention, is obtained from an innovative formulation / production technique which uses various inert fillers depending on the color to be obtained.
To obtain the white color, the present invention provides for the use of an inert filler consisting of the Albite product (NaAlSi3O8), even if not pure, for example consisting of â € œAlogran <®> Naturaleâ €. Albite is a mineral of the feldspar group. It is the element of the plagioclase series containing sodium, by definition it must contain at least 90%. It is a tectosilicate. This charge, due to its crystallochemical nature, is sufficiently opaque and does not require any thermal, mechanical or chemical treatment, as it already prevents the refraction of the incident light. The material allows the total reflection or, more correctly, the total diffusion of the radiant beams (if the surface on which the ray affects shows roughness greater than the dimension of the wavelength of the incident light, the surface cannot be considered â € œsmoothâ € but rough). The albite is then coated with a painting process using aliphatic polyurethane resin, to give the granule resistance to aging. The production process of coating and painting the Albite base with the intrinsic chemical-physical properties described above, involves mixing in mass with the specially prepared paint; during mixing, the temperature is brought to about 70 ° C, in order to speed up the drying step of the paint on the surface of the granule. After the reaction time, the product is screened to eliminate any lumps (multiparticle agglomerates) and left to stabilize for a few days.
This solution prevents the solubilization of the color (Titanium Dioxide) in the epoxy binder in which it is mixed. In this way, therefore, the mass coloring of the compound is eliminated. The result is therefore a compound that does not leave halos on the ceramic surface, facilitating the installation operations. The â € œwhiteâ € color obtained with this production technique is also much brighter than the traditional opaque â € œwhiteâ € color of cementitious or mass-colored epoxy sealants.
Inoltre, perché risulti idonea per la produzione del formulato oggetto dell’invenzione, deve necessariamente possedere le seguenti caratteristiche: Furthermore, in order for it to be suitable for the production of the formulation object of the invention, it must necessarily possess the following characteristics:

Inoltre, perché risulti idonea per la produzione del formulato oggetto dell’invenzione, deve necessariamente possedere le seguenti caratteristiche: To obtain traditional colors, on the other hand, a quartz silica is always used in order to develop suitable characteristics of resistance to both acids and alkalis. Inoltre, perché risulti idonea per la produzione del formulato oggetto dell’invenzione, deve necessariamente possedere le seguenti caratteristiche: Instead, glass microspheres are used to obtain the transparent product. Furthermore, in order for it to be suitable for the production of the formulation object of the invention, it must necessarily possess the following characteristics:

The grains of the solid fraction in particles, having the above characteristics are inserted in the formulation as such to obtain a transparent effect.
The binder consists of epoxy resins based on bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin with reactive or non-reactive diluent. In order to give the product mixed with its catalyst, a particular rheology of a â € œtxotropicâ € character, which makes it possible to apply it even on vertical surfaces without dripping in the case of joints up to 20 mm and wider if used as a sealant, and without letting the tiles slip when used as an adhesive, a particular rheological additive of organic nature is incorporated in the mix. In particular, it is hydrogenated castor oil, in the form of a very fine powder that is dispersed under strong mixing in the mixing phase together with the binder (epoxy resin) and the colored inert fillers. To ensure that the rheological additive is activated, it is essential to raise the mixing temperature up to 37 ° C - 45 ° C. Other types of thixotropic rheological additives in both powder and liquid form can be used in partial or total replacement of hydrogenated castor oil, such as:
- silici amorfe micronizzate o silice pirogenica; - micronized amorphous silica or fumed silica;
- soluzione di ammide poli-idrossi-carbossilata; - poly-hydroxy-carboxylated amide solution;
- soluzione di urea modificata; - modified urea solution;
- bentonite; - bentonite;
- polyethylene fibers with an average length from 100 to 400 microns.
In order to improve the hydrophobic character of the compound and to improve the wettability of the system, a particular plasticizer / wetting agent is incorporated consisting of a non-reactive diluent, comprising isomers of di-isopropyl-naphthalene (C16H20), or a product of the glycol family specifically a polymer of propylene nature, on which the ethylene oxide chain is grafted. Both additives are not incorporated into the polymeric formation of the molecular system during curing, and retain their monomolecular structure, unlike reactive diluents which create interruptions in the epoxy network. Furthermore, they promote the mobility of the resin molecules and the hardening agent, particularly at the beginning of hardening, allowing the reactive groups to react more quickly with each other.
The inert filler consists of spherical grains of quartz silica having a particle size that can vary from 0.06 / 0.5 mm, with the intrinsic chemical-physical characteristics specified above, which has previously undergone a sintering treatment and coated on the surface with a layer of aliphatic polyurethane paint. Or from Albite grains having a granulometry that can vary from 0 / 0.3 mm, coated on the surface with a layer of aliphatic polyurethane paint. Or from spherical grains of quartz silica having a particle size that can vary from about 0.06 / 0.3 mm coated with epoxy resin, or from colorless glass microspheres having a particle size that can vary from about 0.06 / 0.3 mm.
Furthermore, in the first component (part A), to achieve the results of the invention it is necessary to add some very specific additives. These additives play a recognized role in UV-Adsorber and HALS literature, but no one has ever evaluated the role that these products play in symbiosis when used in a predetermined use ratio. In addition to the organic UV-Adsorber, we have introduced a precise percentage of an inorganic UV-Adsorber with very specific chemical-physical characteristics to maximize the resistance to aging of the white color. The additives (UV-Adsorber and HALS) fundamental for the formulation object of the invention are.
UV-Adsorber: ethyl 4 - [[(methylphenylamino) methylene] amino] benzoate (Cas N °: 57834-33-0), or ethyl 4 - [[(methylphenylamino) methylene] amino] benzoate, Concentration> 99%; in the percentage of use of this UV-Adsorber in the compound from about 0.4 or 0.5% to about 1% or 1.1% by weight or approximately the same percentage by volume.
HALS: Bis(1,2,2,6,6-pentametil-4-piperidil) sebacato (Cas N°: 41556-26-7) Concentrazione 70 – 80 % Metil 1,2,2,6,6-pentametil-4-piperidil sebacato (Cas N°: 82919-37-7) Concentrazione 20 – 30 % ; nella percentuale di utilizzo di tale HALS dal 0,9 % o 1 % al 3 % o 3.1 % circa in peso od approssimativamente la medesima percentuale in volume. HALS: Bis (1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate (Cas N °: 41556-26-7) Concentration 70 - 80% Methyl 1,2,2,6,6- pentamethyl-4-piperidyl sebacate (Cas N °: 82919-37-7) Concentration 20 - 30%; in the percentage of use of such HALS from 0.9% or 1% to 3% or 3.1% by weight or approximately the same percentage by volume.
In any case, in order for the products listed above to work in the formulation and have a synergistic effect between them, the use ratio between the UV-Adsorber and HALS substances must be approximately 1: 3 for the colored and approximately 1: 2 for the transparent. .
Furthermore, to maximize the resistance of the white color, a quantity of an inorganic UV-Adsorber is introduced into the mixture, in the indicative percentage of use from 0.5% to 1% by weight, thus varying the synergy ratio between the UV substances. -Adsorber, HALS and inorganic UV-Adsorber as follows 1: 3: 1 - 1: 2: 0.5.
The inorganic UV-Adsorber is Titanium Dioxide (Cas n °: 13463-67-7), but to perform the function of a UV filter and not a pigment, the titanium granule undergoes a surface treatment using a sol -gel that encapsulates the grain of the titanium itself. The product will therefore be constituted as follows: Rutile Titanium Dioxide treated on the surface of the granule with Alumina-zirconia (Al2O3-ZrO2, organic), with a minimum TiO2 content of 90%, pH between 7 - 8, with a particle size average ranging between 100 - 250 nm.
The important feature, experimentally demonstrated, is that the HALS and UV-Adsorber components listed above, used alone have a very low yield, while used together they play a synergistic role allowing a yield of the formulation never obtained previously, this effect of the mixture according to the invention allows an improvement in the durability of the LITOCHROM STARLIKE® product by about 60 times.
Le prove sono state eseguite come segue: The tests were performed as follows:
Some 3 mm thick coatings of the grouting material under examination were carried out, by depositing it on a flat surface with no affinity for epoxy mortar, in order to guarantee perfect detachment conditions, after the time necessary to complete the filming and crosslinking of the resin (opening time).
Subsequently, the tablets thus obtained were divided into specimens of rectangular shape, dimensions 35 x 50 mm. The samples prepared in this way were left in dark conditions for 7 days, at the controlled temperature of 23 ° C ± 2 ° C. After this maturation period, the coloring of each specimen was quantified using a new generation portable spectrophotometer (Datacolor CHECK II Plus, URAI s.p.a., Assago - Milan) capable of expressing the colorimetric measurements according to the system of three-dimensional CIE L * a * b * coordinates. Subsequently, some cycles of artificial aging were carried out, using a machine capable of simulating and accelerating the natural degradation of materials possibly exposed to the degradative and photo-degradative action of atmospheric agents, in different environmental conditions.
For this purpose, the Atlas Suntest XXL + artificial aging test machine (URAI s.p.a., Assago - Milan) was used, which allows, among other things, to adjust the UV-Vis irradiation power of the samples under controlled conditions. relative humidity in the test chamber. Aging was achieved by setting cycles of 20 hours of exposure to artificial light (50 W / m2; room temperature: 38 ° C and relative humidity of 50%), alternating with 2 hours of conditioning at a controlled temperature of 25 ° C ± 2 ° C, and relative humidity of 50%. Considering that there is no specific standard to evaluate the stability of epoxy matrices of this type, it was considered appropriate to choose the working conditions in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 11341: 2004 standard, conceived for the execution of tests and aging test of varnishes and paints. Now, with a good approximation, it is desirable that the transitive property is valid, that is the transferability also to similar matrices from the compositional point of view, and subject to similar degradative processes, is valid.
At the end of each exposure cycle, colorimetric measurements were carried out on each specimen, in order to evaluate the superficial chromatic variation caused by the possible degradation induced by the machine. In particular, the color that appears due to the degradative yellowing of the white material has been quantified considering only the value assumed by the dimensional coordinate b * (relative to the yellow color, for positive values of the axis) of the CIE L system * a * b *. The choice of this parameter is based on studies based on experimental observations and correlation methodologies using DoE techniques (Design of Experiments methodology), carried out within the FOTOSTA project.
This parameter, in fact, produced the best results in terms of linearity of response in the studies of the degree of chromatic variation (yellowing of the white material) compared to the quantity of energy radiated on the same samples. It was also decided to establish a threshold limit value of b * which would allow to objectively identify any samples that had reached a degree of yellowing such that the subsequent study would not have produced interesting results from the point of view. of chromatic acceptability. In other words, beyond the b * threshold value set a priori, the photooxidative degradation processes take on such importance, to the point that the â € œwhiteâ € material is no longer classified as such. Conversely, the best experimental conditions that guarantee photostability of the â € œwhiteâ € material are generally found for low values of the parameter b *. This value has been set at 8 units on the positive axis of the b * axis, identified as a value beyond which the sample undergoes a color change tending to yellow, already perceptible by the human eye and, consequently, loss of characteristics of acceptability and aesthetic functionality of the material. However, the best observational effects with the naked eye, for a specimen with this value of b *, are obtained by comparison by direct comparison with a reference â € œwhiteâ € surface. These considerations underline the adequacy of the threshold value chosen, since it allows us to quantify the degree of progress of the surface degradation processes to which the sample is subjected, still allowing a discretionary margin of photo stability, useful and necessary to guarantee the performance performances of â € œwhiteâ € materials after installation.
Riportiamo di seguito i risultati della sperimentazione: From the processing of the data recorded on the colorimeter after each aging cycle, it was possible to obtain a trace (Figure 1) which shows the trend of the chosen colorimetric coordinate (b *), as a function of the amount of light energy radiated for surface unit (MJ m-2). It is evident that the parameter on the abscissa (MJ m-2) is directly related to the time variable, since the spectrophotometric measurements were carried out at regular periods of irradiation time with constant power output (20 h 50 W / m2 = 3, 6 MJ / m2). The trace clearly illustrates the evolution of the degree of chromatic change of the samples as a function of the amount of energy radiated on them, and highlights a trend that suggests a direct proportionality between the two reported variables (b * vs MJ m-2) . The graph also makes it possible to approximately calculate a limit value of radiated energy at which the sample has not yet significantly undergone photochemical stress, possibly associated with chromatic changes such as to compromise the functional aesthetic properties of the product itself.
