Description

The electronic directory device for telephone calls presented here allows to integrate the traditional functions of telephone sets in order to allow easier and faster use.

Indeed ? well known that storing a telephone number? typically more? complex (as well as more prone to errors) than memorizing the name (and / or surname) of a person or company, etc.

Starting from this simple consideration, the new device provides the possibility? to select a telephone number, and then to activate the communication, starting only from the information of the name of the user requested, or if necessary from other significant data.

To this end, the new device is based on a simple hardware system to support a telephone archive and capable of providing simple data entry / data retrivai primitives (data entry / data search).

As shown in the Summary Table, this device is based on simple components such as a simple Local Archive (L) (achievable via a non-volatile rewritable memory chip - e.g. of the EAROM type), an alphanumeric input keypad (K) and an output display (V). Obviously the whole thing? managed through an appropriate control logic network connected to the telephone system (T).

The call is selected by typing the name of the user to be called on the alphanumeric keypad, accompanied if necessary by other information; electronically, by accessing the local archive, the called user is selected and the corresponding telephone number is identified. All this information is shown on the display for the possible control of the call and therefore, through a simple call button? possible to start the selection of the number that will happen? automatically. AND? It is obvious that, should cases of homonymy arise, these could appear on the display with any other information relating to each of the selected users (for example the address) thus allowing a very easy choice by the operator.

Undoubtedly to allow such a mode? phone call, there is a phase of generation of the electronic directory, that is a phase in which the user enters (or adds or updates) the references (for example names, surnames, addresses, with the relative telephone numbers) using the alphanumeric keypad he believes he wants to keep in his electronic directory.

AND? also of great importance, the possibility? to request the number of a user not present in the local archive, referring in "on-line" to the STET archives, thus having the possibility? to change the search domain passing from a private archive to the public one (where, for example, the data entered does not correspond to any of the references in the local archive). As schematically shown in Table I, this solution would be extremely useful and simple to implement as it could use a modem (M) and the same telephone line as the user, avoiding the long procedure of calling the STET archive consultation numbers by means of an operator.
