Abstract

1374289 Surface treatment of wood E G L ERIKSSON 3 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 51040/71 Heading DIP A method for treating the surface of wood, comprises pretreating the wood with a liquid hydrophilic substance substantially free of solvent and which facilitates penetration of the wood surface by an impregnation agent, the substance being caused to harden thereafter by subsequent treatment with the impregnating agent which reacts with the substance to form a polymer. The substance may be phenol or resorcinol. The agent may be an aqueous solution of hexamethylene tetramine, melamine formaldehyde or an intermediate reaction product of phenol and paraformaldehyde. Disproportionate penetration of the end surfaces relative to the other surfaces is prevented by initially applying an aqueous melamine resin to the end surfaces. This reacts with the phenol during the pretreatment to form a phenol insoluble polymer which prevents further penetration of the end surfaces. The phenol pretreatment may be effected at elevated temperature. Sulphuric acid or stannous chloride may be added to the phenol. The pre-treatment may be followed by a vacuum treatment. The subsequent impregnation may be at elevated temperature and pressure. This may be followed by a heat treatment which may be in two stages (a) oven at 80-140‹C for 1-2 hours and (b) hot press at 130-180‹C for 5-20 min. The surface finish is durable, abrasion-resistant and may be water repellant.
