Description
CAMPO DELL'INVENZIONE FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a photosensitive photographic material to silver halides which has incorporated in its hydrophilic colloidal layer discrete particles of a water insoluble polymeric matting agent and to a process for preparing a dispersion of discrete particles of said polymeric matting agent in aqueous compositions.
STATO DELL'ARTE STATE OF THE ART
In the photographic field, water-insoluble matting agents have been used in the upper or back hydrophilic colloidal layers of light-sensitive silver halide materials to prevent adhesion when such materials are stored in rolls, magazines, cassettes under conditions of relatively high humidity and temperature, to prevent electrostatic charges by reducing the contact surface of the photographic material, to avoid the formation of Newton's rings during printing and enlarging, or to reduce the occurrence of scratches during storage or packaging of the photographic material.
In the art it is well known that, to solve these problems, in the outermost layers of a photographic material are incorporated, as matting agents, fine particles of inorganic substances, such as silicon dioxide, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, and the like, or organic substances, such as polymethylmethacrylate, cellulose acetopropionate, and the like. These and other matting agents are described, for example, in U.S. Patent 3,411,907 and British Patent 837,529. Said matting agents are insoluble in the alkaline treatment solutions and remain in the treated photographic material.
During or after the development treatment it is desirable, in some cases, to remove the matting agents in order to improve the transparency and graininess of the final image. Matting agents insoluble in neutral or acidic solutions and soluble in alkaline media have therefore been described in the art. In particular, in the United States patents 2,391,181, 2,992,101, 3,767,448 and 4,142,894 and in the English patent 878,520, matting agents soluble in alkaline media consisting of copolymers of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate have been described, and in the English patent 1,055 713 copolymers of styrene and α, β-ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing a carboxyl group have been disclosed. Such matting agents can be incorporated in the photographic layers in the form of discrete particles by dispersing a solution of matting agent in an organic solvent immiscible with water in an aqueous solution of gelatin, eliminating the organic solvent and then introducing the dispersion obtained in the coating composition. of the photographic layer. Organic solvents or combinations thereof were studied with the copolymers of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate, the basic solvent being butanol and its mixtures with other solvents. Since butanol is a low volatility solvent, it must be removed by cooling the dispersion and washing it with deionized water.
Alkaline media soluble matting agents, which consist of copolymers of methacrylic acid and ethyl methacrylate containing 20 to 50% by weight of methacrylic acid, have been disclosed in U.S. Patent 4,447,525. These copolymers dissolve at high concentrations in very volatile organic solvents such as ethyl acetate, a solvent that can be easily removed by evaporation from the polymer dispersion in the aqueous gelatin solution.
Matting agents are characterized by the numerical average of their discrete particle size (DMP) and in the patents teachings can be found on how to control DMP during the synthesis process of such particles.
Another characteristic of matting agents is their particle size distribution (DDP), an aspect of which is the measurement of the proportion of the largest discrete particles present in the dispersion. The presence of such huge particles having a size that exceeds 10 in diameter can cause undesirable side effects, such as a disturbance in the uniformity of spreading of the photographic material and disturbances in the relations between distinct layers in a plurality of layers spread one over the other in a photographic material. European Patent Application No. 370,405 discloses matting agents which have a DDP of no more than 10 which does not give rise to the aforementioned undesirable side effects. Nevertheless, when the dispersion of the polymeric matting agent is mixed with gelatin, the formation of aggregates can occur. The formation of aggregates in paving solutions can actually cause the formation of clusters of larger particles which cause undesirable side effects such as disturbance in the uniformity of the paving, a haze formation in the light-sensitive element after treatment, a deterioration transparency of the formed image, and a deterioration of the image grain.
US patent 4,142,894 describes a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid with a molar ratio between 6: 4 and 9: 1 which in the coating solution does not form aggregates even when the copolymer particles are used in large quantities. Patent GB 1,496,534 describes a silver halide photographic material with a surface layer containing at least one organic fluorinated compound and at least one carboxylic compound containing a hydrophobic group, said material being affected by a lower aggregation of the matting agent in the coating solution . These solutions are, on the one hand, referred to a preferred and particular type of matting agent, and on the other hand, difficult to realize. Therefore, in order to avoid the aforementioned undesirable effects, it is particularly desired to develop an improved process of mixing the dispersions of polymeric matting agents with hydrophilic colloids.

Said polymers can be prepared by polymerization through ethylenically unsaturated groups of the monomers described above, using any of the conventional polymerization mechanisms, preferably free radical polymerization. In general, free radical polymerization is carried out by heating a reaction mass to a suitable temperature (which usually does not exceed 100 ° C and preferably is between 50 and 100 ° C) in a suitable solvent (usually ethanol or methanol. ). The reaction mass contains the monomer (or a mixture of the two monomers) in a suitable concentration with respect to the solvent (usually a concentration that does not exceed 40% by weight of the monomer [or mixture of the two monomers] with respect to the solvent, preferably between 15 and 30%) in the presence of a polymerization catalyst (for example of the free radical type, such as benzoyl peroxide or cumene hydroperoxide, or of the azo type, such as α, α'-azobisisobutyronitrile). The obtained polymer can then be separated from the reaction mixture for example by precipitation in a non-solvent, such as water, and drying.

The present invention is not limited to the polymeric matting agents of the specific examples described above, said examples representing only a preferred embodiment. Any polymeric matting agent known in photography can be used in combination with said stilbene polysulfonate compounds to reduce particle aggregation in coating solutions. According to the process of the present invention, before mixing with an aqueous solution of hydrophilic colloid, a dispersion in water of the polymer described above is made. Any method known in the art can be used to make the dispersion. For example, the polymeric matting agent can be dissolved in a water insoluble organic solvent and then the obtained solution dispersed in water. According to another method, the dispersion of polymeric matting agent can be obtained directly from the polymerization, under stirring, of the monomer in water and / or in an organic solvent, which is, a solvent for the monomer (s) but not for the polymer. Generally, the organic solvent is removed from the dispersion by washing the dispersion with pure water or by heating, as known in the art. These and other methods are widely described in the art, for example, in US patents 2,391,181, 2,701,245, 3,767,448, 4,447,525, in the patent GB 878,520, 1,055,713, 2,078,992, in the Research Disclosure, December 1989, - Item 308119 and April 1982, Item 21617.

The solvents may also have a water solubility at 20 ° C which is preferably less than 20 grams per liter, and more preferably less than 10 grams per liter.
As described in these references, these stilbene compounds have previously been used in the textile, paper and photographic industries as whitening, brightening and / or supersensitizing agents in combination with carbocyanine derivatives. Patent application EP 251.282 describes the use of a polysulfonated compound of stilbene as a disaggregant of carbocyaninic dyes to obtain the correct wavelength of absorption (other disaggregants are suggested and, as a reference on the aggregation of dyes, a different problem from that relating to the aggregation of polymeric matting agents, Herz, Photographic Science and Engineering, 18, pp. 323-335, May / June 1974 is cited). These references do not describe said stilbene polysulfonated compounds as disaggregants for polymeric matting agents in photographic layers. Such polysulfonated stilbene compounds are sold under various trade names such as Leucophor B, Calcofluor White MR, Tinopal (SP, SFP, STP, MSP, WR, BV277, 2B, GS, NG), Blancofor SC, HiItamine (BSP, N, 6T6 ), and similar.
The aforesaid polysulfonated compounds of stilbene can be present in amounts from 0.05 to 5% by weight, preferably from 0.1 to 1%, with respect to the total weight of the resulting hydrophilic colloid dispersion. In a preferred embodiment of the process of the present invention said stilbene polysulfonated compound is dissolved in the hydrophilic colloid solution and then the aqueous dispersion of the polymeric maturing agent is added to this resulting solution.
Ε' preferibile incorporare detta disper-, sione nello strato protettivo superficiale. The above polymeric matting agent disperses in the aqueous solution of the hydrophilic colloid in the form of finely divided particles with less than one percent of any aggregate of particles with more than three particles. Aggregates with more than three particles are preferably substantially absent. These dispersions are then introduced into the coating composition of the non-photosensitive outer layer of a photosensitive silver halide element. Said outer layer can be a surface protective layer spread over the silver halide emulsion layers, or a back protective layer spread over the support base on the opposite side to that containing the photosensitive layers, or it can be both. It is preferable to incorporate said dispersion into the surface protective layer.
Consequently, in another aspect the present invention relates to a silver halide photographic element comprising a support base, one or more layers of photosensitive silver halide emulsion and at least one non-photosensitive external protective layer spread over said layers. or on the back layer of said support base, at least one of said outer protective layer comprising discrete particles of a polymeric matting agent and a polysulfonated compound of the stilbene represented by the above formula (I).
