Abstract

Variants of human ciliar neurotrophic factor (hCNTF) characterised in the main by the fact that they are variants of hCNTF in which the glutamine residue (Gln) at position 167 is substituted by an amino acid residue selected from the group comprising alanine (Ala) histidine (His), threonine (Thr) and tyrosine (Tyr). These proteins are important active ingredients in the preparation of drugs for the cure of diseases of the nervous system. Figure 5 shows the effect of hCNTF variants according to the invention on the survival of the embryonal neurones of chick ciliar ganglion in culture. ^ Simulation of cell survival (% of maximum effect) > [CNTF or mutant] (Ng/ml) <IMAGE>
