Abstract
This invention relates to a process for the production of steel, especially for the production of steel using electric furnaces, which comprises a stage of loading the ferrous material into a fusion furnace, a stage of melting in which heat energy is provided to the ferrous material to increase its temperature to a level above the melting temperature and a stage of refining the steel in the liquid state deriving from the melting of the ferrous material. At least in the course of the refining stage methane or another hydrocarbon and oxygen are simultaneously injected into the bath of steel in the liquid state to replace the powdered coal and/or lump coal conventionally used. <IMAGE>
