Abstract

Method which allows the introduction, the incorporation, and the emergence of optical fibres inside a piece of composite material, during the manufacturing process. The incorporation of the optical fibres is done in order to allow a diagnosis of mechanical, thermal, chemical quantities inside the piece. The method of incorporation calls for the use of a tool suitable for passing through the composite material in the entry/exit zones of the optical fibre and, furthermore, calls for the use of an adhesive material based on synthetic rubber, compatible with the composite material, in the same entry/exit zones. Such a solution has the advantage of maintaining the integrity of the optical fibre in the critical entry/exit zones, and furthermore allows an easy handling of same for subsequent necessary connections to suitable instruments/apparatus of measurement and/or inspection of structures made of composite material (Smart Structures). <IMAGE>
