Abstract

A connecting rod intended for 2-stroke engines of the type in which the casing (commonly known as the pump casing) acts as a washing pump, characterised by a composite structure comprising at least 1 metal member designed to contribute predominantly to mechanical strength and at least one member of organic material designed to contribute mainly to the volume of the connecting rod without however compromising its mass. The metal member is pressed together with the member of organic material and may have end bearings of the connecting rod exposed with respect to the member of organic material, and a rod which connects the bearings and is incorporated in the element of organic material. The pressed members of organic material have lateral appendages in the form of fins shaped and arranged in such a way as to encourage the flow of air or pumped mixture to the foot of the connecting rod and the top of the piston. The increased volume of the connecting rod reduces dead space in the housing and improves the efficiency of the housing acting as a pump, without the inertial mass of the connecting rod being substantially increased, and the fins encourage lubrication and cooling. <IMAGE>
