Abstract

Ammonia is synthesised from H2 and N2 at elevated temp. and pressure, using a catalyst. The reaction is exothermic, and the yield is increased by removing the heat of reaction as the reaction proceeds. This is to be done by using 2 beds of catalyst and passing the gas leaving the first bed through a heat exchanger to cool it before it goes to the second bed. For compactness, the beds are hollow cylinders, placed end-to-end within the reactor's cylindrical envelope, and the heat exchanger is in the hollow centre of one of these cylinders. The coolant is fresh H2-N2 mixt., after passing through the heat exchanger, it enters the reaction vessel (its temp. having been adjusted by admixture of fresh cool gas). A third supply of the gas reaches the reaction vessel after having passed along the reactor's envelope. This method yields a higher percentage of ammonia than is got when cooling is by admixture of fresh unreacted gas, instead of by heat exchanger.
