Abstract

Composite slabs for soundproof floors, corridors etc. comprise a base layer of flexible expanded matl., pref. polyethylene (PE), bonded to an intermediate bitumastic layer reinforced on both faces with embedded glass fibres or mat, on top of which is a further bitumastic layer dressed with hard mineral flakes or granules. The combination of cellular and reinforced bitumastic layers provide complementary acoustic damping effects and complementary dynamic mechanical resistance and damping to pass (French) standard tests for building components in respect of impact resistance, acoustic insulation and wear resistance, in a form which can be installed relatively quickly and by relatively unskilled labour. Pref. the expanded PE base is about 2 mm thick, the reinforced and coated bitumastic layers about 5 mm thick, for an overall thickness of about 7 mm. The expanded sheet and the superficial dressings are pref. applied to bitumastic layers preheated to 80-130 deg.C. The tiles may be stuck to their supporting structure -for a screed surface the bonding agent may be cement-based: for a rubber, plastic or textile underlay, the bonding agent may be an acrylic based adhesive.
