Abstract
Austenitic stainless steel base is coated with an alloy of gold, platinum and/or palladium by plating a selected area of the base with layers of the alloy constituent metals in amts. corresp. to those in the alloy, and then heating the layers to cause them to alloy. The method is useful for decorative coating of austenitic stainless steel, e.g. with 14 or 18 carat gold, for spectacle frames, watch casings, bracelets and necklaces. The method allows a wider variety of alloys to be formed on the base by plating and uniform, fine, very dense layers are produced.
