Abstract

A process for prodn. of low mol. wt. vinylidene fluoride (I) homopolymers or copolymers with hexafluoropropene (II) or tetrafluoroethylene (III) or mixts. is claimed. Polymerisation is carried out in the presence of a radical initiator (IV) at 20-160 deg.C in a solvent selected from carboxylic acid esters of formula R-COO-R', where R = H or 1-4C alkyl and R' = 1-5C alkyl. Opt. R and/or R' may contain, as substits., an OH gp. or an alkoxy gp. OR'', where R'' = R'. Opt. the copolymer can be additionally vulcanised directly in soln. Opt. the solid polymer is recovered by a pptn. agent. Vinylidene fluoride homopolymers having mol. wts. of 1000-20000, partic. 1000-5000 are also claimed. The copolymers pref. contain 40-95 (partic. 50-85) mole % (I), 0-45 (partic. 15-45) mole % (II) and 0-30 (partic. 0-25) mole % (III). The solvent/polymer wt. ratio is pref. 4:1-10:1 at the end of polymerisation. (IV) is pref. selected from peroxide-type free radical formers (partic. bis-(4-t-Bu-cyclohexyl)-peroxy dicarbonate or t-Bu-peroxide) or azo catalysts (partic. azo-bis-isobutyronitrile). The solvent is pref. selected from an ester of formic, acetic or propionic acids with MeOH, EtOH or t-BuOH.
