Abstract

A composite element comprises a three-layer plate laminate of artificially aged aluminium alloys, in which: (a) the central layer consists of an aluminium alloy of compsn. 6-8% Zn, 2-3% Mg, 1.0-2.3% Cu, 0.25-1% one or more of Mn, Cr, Zr and Ti, balance Al and impurities and has high mechanical strength (tensile strength 540-750 N/sq.mm) and hardness; and (b) the front and backing layers consist of an aluminium alloy of compsn. 4-6% Zn, 1-2.5% Mg, 0-0.15% Cu, 0.25-1% one or more of Mn, Cr, Zr and Ti, balance Al and impurities and have good toughness, good weldability and tensile strength of 290-550 N/sq.mm. The layers are overlaid and welded together at their interfaces to give a plate of 10-100mm thickness, the central layer making up 35-70% of the overall thickness and the front and backing layers each making up 15-32.5% of the overall thickness.
