Abstract
Crushed siliceous material and iron-contg. material, opt. together with a reductant, are blown into a plasma gas by means of a carrier gas and then heated with the energy-rich plasma gas in a reaction zone surrounded by lumps of solid reductant. The silica is melted, reduced to silicon and then combined with iron to form ferrosilicon. The process allows particulate starting materials to be used, thus extending the choice of siliceous materials and reducing costs. The electrical properties of the starting materials are unimportant (cf. electric furnace redn. processes) so that the choice of reductants is extended. The continuous excess of reductant ensures that any SiO formed is immediately reduced to silicon.
