Abstract

The constant mesh change speed gear train (10) has an input shaft with a gear (16), and an output shaft with a gear (20). A primary layshaft has its own change speed input gear (22) in constant mesh with the input shaft gear and its own output gear (24) in constant mesh with the output shaft gear. There is a clutch at one end of the layshaft to selectively connect the input and output gears. There is a range layshaft with input (50) and output (52) gears selectively connected by a clutch. The range layshaft gears are in direct constant mesh with first and second range gears, one of which is connected to the input or output shaft gears. A range clutch selectively transmits drive between the first and second range gears. A forward drive transmission ratio provided by the gear train may be raised or lowered by transmitting drive either through the range clutch or via the range layshaft.
