Abstract
An antiinflammatory and analgesic ointment comprises as an active ingredient , 0.5-1.5 wt.% of indomethacin. As the carrier, 5-35% of glycol (e.g. propylene-glycol, butyleneglycol), 10-50% of lower alcohol (e.g. ethanol) and 30-55% of water are used. Further, a gel-forming agent such as carboxyvinyl polymer, haydroxyethylcellulose, methylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, etc. is added. To facilitate the absorption of indomethacin through skin, esters of mono- of di-carboxylic acids are incorporated. Since indomethacin is not stable under a basic condition, it is necessary toa adjust the pH of the ointment to 5.5-7.5, (6.2-6.7). The compsn. of indomethacin facilitates its use over a prolonged period without troubles on gastric tracts.
