Abstract
Olefins are (co)polymerised opt. with dienes using a catalyst system comprising (A) a solid Ti cpd. contg. Mg, Ti, a halogen and an ester from polycarboxylic acid ester and polyhydroxy cpd. esters (B) an organometallic cpd. of a Gp. (I) to (III) metals and (C) an organosilicon cpd. contg. an Si-O-C or an Si-N-C bond. Component (A) is prepd. by contacting a liq. hydrocarbon soln. (1) of a Mg cpd. with (ii) a Ti cpd. in the liq. state to form a solid prod. or by prepg. first a liq. hydrocarbon soln. of the Mg cpd (i) and the Ti cpd. (ii), then forming a solid prod. from that soln., the reaction to form the solid prod. being effected in presence of (D) an electron donor, and during or after the formation of the solid prod., contacting the latter with (E) an ester comprising polycarboxylic acid esters and polyhydroxy esters esters. The catalyst system gives polymers of high stereospecificity in high yields from olefins contg. at least 3C even when the melt index of the polymer is modified by using a mol.wt. regulator such as hydrogen. When polymsn. is effected according to the slurry method or in vapour phase, granular or spherical polymer is obtd. having good flow props., high apparent density and marrow particle size distribution. Redn. in catalytic activity as polymsn. proceeds is very low.
