Abstract

Conc. aq. compsn., for forming a skin over inflammable liqs., contain (A) 0.5-25 wt. % fluorinated surfactant, (B) 0.1-5 wt.% fluorinated non-ionic synergistic prod. (C) 0.1-25 wt. % non-fluorinated ionic surfactant, (D) 0.1-40 wt. % non-fluorinated non-ionic surfactant, (E) 0-70% wt. solvents, (F) 0-5 wt. % electrolyte and (G) balance water. Pref. (A) is of formula Rf-R6-S-CHR1-CO-NH-CR2R3-CR4R5-SO3 n M (where Rf is 1-18C perfluoroalkyl gp. opt. substd. by a 2-6C perfluoroalkoxyf R1-5 are H or alkyl; R3 may also be Ph, tolyl or pyridyl; R6 is 1-12C alkylene, 2-12C alkylenethioalkylene, 2-12C alkylenoxyalkylene or 2-12C alkylene iminoalkylene; M is H or alkali(ne earth) metal of valence n). (B) may be Rf-Tm-Z (where T is R6 or R6-S-CH2CHR1-, m = 0 or 1; Z is -CONR1R2, -CN, -CONR1COR2, -SO2NR1R2, -SO2NR1R7(OH)n- -R7(OH)m -R7)O2CR1)n, -CO2R1 or -C(+NH)NR1R2; R7 is 1-12 alkylen alkylene. (C) is pref. of formula R8-S-CH2-CHr1-CO-NH-CR2R3-CR4R5-SO3 nM (where R8 is (cyclo)alkyl, Ph, benzyl, furfuryl or a gp. contg. mercaptan). The compsns. are for protecting hydrocarbons and weakly polar solvents e.g. petrol, heptane, toluene, aircraft fuel, naphtha, benzene, butyl acetate, methylisobutylketone, methanol, acetone, cellusolve, etc. They may be used in amts. as low as 1%, have long life and are ecologically desirable.
