Abstract
Buccal compsn. contains an anti-tartar agent a magnesium polycarboxylate complex formed from a magnesium cpd. and a polycarboxy cpd. having ionisable carboxy gps. chosen from (a) a copolymer of maleic acid or of maleic anhydride or of maleic anhydride and an olefin, (b) sulphoacrylic oligomers having an average m.wt. 1000 and (c) a tricarboxy-oxa-butanol or -pentanol, which is joined ionically to the dissociable magnesium cpd. Used in prevention of dental tartar by using the compsn. as a mouthwash or as a dentifrice, so that the complex is absorbed on the buccal surfaces to form a reservoir of magnesium ions which are slowly released in the buccal cavity.
