Abstract

Fabric-reinforced ion exchange membrane is prepd. by first hearing a fluoro-polymer material contg. pendant side chains contg. sulphonyl gps. linked to C atoms, which themselves are linked to at least one F atom, to a temp producing sufficient flow of the polymer by melting to enable it to laminate with an open-meshed reinforcing fabric. The reinforcing fabric is then applied to the surface of the heated polymer with sufficient pressure to ensure that the polymer flows at least partially through the fabric and forms a laminate. The surface of the fluoro-polymer is treated with prim. and/or sec. amine, so that a major portion of the sulphonyl gps. on the surface are converted into the -SO2N-form, to a depth of >=10 (esp. 38-50) mu m. The aminated surface is continuous, does not include any micro-cracks and coasts the reinforcing fabric. Used for the prodn. of Cl2 and alkali metal hdyroxides, partic. in high concns. The membrane does not break and is satisfactory in cells operating under high current yield and low voltage.
