Abstract
A concn. cell, partic. for measuring the partial press. of oxygen in a gas mixt. and using a solid electrolyte, incorporates an ionic conductor sepg. a sample chamber and a standard chamber. A known concn. of gas is established on one side and an unknown concn. is established on the other. The known concn. is changed by exposing the first side to oxygen which is liberated from a metal/metal oxide standard, e.g. Pd/PdO. The appts. is pref. operated according to a constant e.m.f mode. The standard is sealed in the standard chamber and a fixed operating value of e.m.f. is chosen. The operating temp. is adjusted by an automatic electronic control system which modifies the value until the concn. relations are such that they establish a potential difference on one side and othe other of the disc which is equal to the fixed e.m.f. chosen. The temp. of the disc is then related to the concn. of oxygen in the sample. Fabrication is simple and leads to small, robust detectors which can resists unfavourable environments, large temp. changes, thermal cycles and vibrations, while giving reliable and precise results. The construction is very flexible.
