Abstract

A process for prepf. collagen for gelatin mfr. from animal waste comprises treating the waste constituted by skin, sinews and tendons by the following successive operations. The material is first washed and defatted in soda soln. to expand the pores and facilitate the removal of blood and fat. Then the material is reduced to a paste by physical means. The paste is then neutralised, washed with cold water and pressed to remove any water leaving a cake of pure collagen. The collagen, opt. after drying and storing is hydrolysed to form a light density broth which gelled at low temp. and dried. A particular appts. feeds the broth near its gelling paint to a stainless steel band conveyor which circulates in an area kept at 0-10 degrees C esp. about 5 degrees C. From there, the film of gelatine passes to a second area via a series of belt conveyors passing from top to bottom; this area is maintained at 10-30 degrees C with a blower providing a feed of fresh air. The process which uses select waste materials enables a much shorter process time (1 -1 1/2 days, compared with 6-8 weeks, a continuous process, and much pleasanter working conditions.
