Abstract

Process for separating isotopes from a gas mixt. contg. different types of isotopes, comprises irradiating the gas mixt. with laser light in which the photons have an energy which is resonant with an excitation level of one of the isotopes in the gas mixt., and simultaneously introducing metastable atoms or molecules into the mixt., the projection energy being less than the ionisation energy of the components of the mixt. and greater than the energy interval between the ionisation energy of the isotope type excited by the laser light and the energy of the excitation level of the same isotope type. The laser excitation followed by Penning ionisation allows selective isolation of isotopes from gas mixts., esp. isotope types from metallic uranium.
