Abstract

Seal is a gland with a tubular barrel and radially projecting flange by which it is held on the hollow body. A movable valve spindle has a boss at its extremity for blocking the flow passage whilst the valve is working. Valve stem passes through the tubular seal. The outer surface of the stem fitting closely to the bore of the tube whilst an annular rib or ribs on one surface presses tightly against the other to rule out the possibility of leakage from the valve body. A number of annular ribs may be provided along the bore of the sealing gland or on the valve stem. The dimensions of the bore and the ribs ensuring sufficient compression to hold the seal securely in place. When the annular ribs are arranged on the valve stem their planes remain offset to the holding down flange of the seal, whatever the position of the valve spindle. All the necessary force for ensuring a tight joint over a range of differences of pressure, is obtd. by the elastic load exerted by the ribs or ribs against the sleeve of the gland.
