Abstract

The carbon brush has improved contact characteristics and an increased wear resistance. A non-melting grease and/or wax and/or a high viscosity oil are used as impregnants. The used impregnant may be of synthetic, mineral, animal, or vegetable origin and it is thoroughly mixed with a gelling agent of inorganic and/or organic base. The specified mixing transforms the base material into non-melting or non-flowing, harder and more wear resistant condition. The gelling agent may consist of montmorillonite flakes whose surfaces are coated with long chain hydrocarbons. Improving additives may contain metal sulphides, metal oxides and PTFE powder. The impregnant may form 1 to 25% wt. of the finished carbon brush.
