Abstract
2-Aryl-2H-benzotriazoles (I) are prepd. by redn. and cyclisation of the corresp. o-nitroazobenzene (II) with H2 at 20-100 deg.C/1-66 atmos. in alkaline medium (pH above 10) in the presence of (as catalyst) a Gp VIII noble metal. (Where R1 is H or Cl; R2 is H, Cl, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, 2-9C carboalkoxy, CO2H or SO3H; R3 is 1-12C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, Ph (opt. substd. by 1-8C alkyl), 5-6C cycloalkyl, 2-9C carboalkoxy, Cl, (CH2)2CO2H, or 7-9C aralkyl, R4 is H, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, Cl, or OH; R5 is H, 1-12C alkyl, Cl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, or 7-9C aralkyl). In (I), when R1, R2, R3, R4 or R5 is Cl, the catalyst is not Pd. Process gives high yield of (I) of acceptable purity and avoids effluent problems. (I) are dyestuff intermediates, optical brighteners, and selective UV absorbing stabilisers (for polymeric fibres, films, etc.).
