Abstract

Coating is deposited by reactive projecting from a cathode assembly formed by spaced parallel strips of the metal and which is moved to and from perpendicular to the length of the strips and parallel to the area of the support to be coated. The thickness of the coating deposited is controlled in the area of the support to be coated by arranging the cathode strips so that their effective width across any given area of he support is modified according to the thickness of the coating to be deposited in that area. Control of the effective width of the cathode strips is obtd. e.g. by using masks applied to the strips.
