A pile fabric is formed by passing a substrate together with a plastic film over a surface of e.g. a forming roll having pref. a satin finish so that the film is sandwiched between this surface and the substrate. The forming roll is heated to a temp. above the m.pt. of the film so that it bonds to the substrate and sticks to the surface of the forming roll. The substrate and film are ripped off the surface of the roll so that the film fibrillates and forms a pile on the surface of the substrate. Finally the fibrilles forming the pile are cooled pref. by directing on air jet onto the film at the point at which it is ripped off the forming roll. The substrate is preheated before passing to the forming roll. Pre-heating the substrate allows the substrate and film to be passed over the forming roll at a higher speed thereby increasing the speed of prodn. of the finished pile fabric.
