Abstract

A bonded composite solid consisting of a fibre-reinforced metal matrix is produced by (a) dispersing the fibres in a soln. of an org. salt of a metal which can decompose on heating with deposition of the metal (b) pptg. the salt from soln. to give an intimate mixt. with the fibres and heating this mixt. under conditions such that the salt decomposes and produces finely divided metal (c) bringing the mixt. thus produced at a specific temp. and pressure into the form of a fibre-reinforced compacted mass. The salt soln. for the process is prepd. by dispersing an oxide or carbonate of the metal in a working liq., adding an org. acid to produce a soln. of an org. salt of the metal, and after pptg. the intimate mixt. as in (b) filtering and recycling the filtrate as working liq. Metals having org. salts thermally decomposing below their m.pt. may be used e.g. Fe, Co, Cu, Pb, Ag, Au, Ni or alloys of these and partic. Pb. The org. acid may be formic or acetic or in the case of Ag, the lactate or tartrate salt may be used.
