Acenaphthenes, e.g. decahydroacenaphthene, octahydroacenaphthene, hexahydroacenaphthene, tetrahydroacenaphthene, acenaphthene or their mixtures, are produced by reacting cyclododecatriene in the presence of a zeolite catalyst which has been ion-exchanged with alkaline earth, Mn gp. or rare-earth metal ions. Reaction temp. is pref. 200-400 degrees C. Acenaphthenes are useful as raw materials for jet engine fuels, synthetic resins, dyes, bactericides, insecticides, synthetic lubricant oils and lubricant additives. The new catalysts have the following advantages: non-corrosive; more active and used in smaller amts. than known catalysts; better yields and selectivity longer life and easier regeneration; no pollution problems; suitable for industrial use in a continuous flow system.
