Abstract

Marking strip has a top wear-resistant and non-skid layer and a substrate for bonding to the road. Between these layers is >=1 thin flexible but non-extensible strong layer which is compatible with and firmly bonded to them. Localised tangential stresses in the top surface (from skids) are transmitted and distributed by this intermediate layer over a larger area between the top and bottom layers. Typically the top layer is polyurethane resin contg. embedded particles such as quartz. The intermediate layer may be nonwoven fabric impregnated with epoxy resin and/or bituminous material. The system resists displacement forces from skidding tyres without being stripped off the road or creasing. It can however be removed when necessary.
