Abstract

A new synthetic rubber compsn. with improved green strength is prepd. by reacting a rubbery polymer of a 4-6C conj. olefin (I) (opt. copolymerised with an 8-10C aromatic vinyl(idene) hydrocarbon or a 3-5C vinyl nitrile) which has 0.5-10 mmoles tert. amine gps/100g polymer with a halogen cpd. of formula (II) X X CG2 x R x CH2 x Y (X and Y are each Cl, Br or I; R = mononuclear aryl substd. by CH2X or CH3O; or polynuclear aryl chosen from diphenyl, diphenyl (thio) ether, diphenyl (1-4C) alkane or naphthalene; all aryls opt. substd. by >=1 lower (halo) alkyl x aryl or lower alkenyl, and CH2X and CH2Y are directly bonded to different rings when R is polynuclear). (II) provide labile crosslinks which improve the green strength but which are broken on heating etc. so the compsns. can be treated like ordinary rubbers e.g. formed into tyres. Compared with the dihalo cpds. described in the parent patent. (II) have a less irritating odour; lower vapour press x so are easily handled with less loss of matl. and can be added to the polymer latex at the coagulation stage.
