Abstract

Tubular container is made of coated metal sheet with a longitudinal lap joint, where the surface of the sheet is coated with a mixt. of a pigment and an epoxy resin precursor of mol. wt. 1000-4000, epoxy equiv. wt of 425-6000. The coated sheet is decorated with printing etc. prior to fabrication of the can. The lap joint is bonded using an inter org. adhesive, esp. a linear superpolyamide of inherent viscosity >=0.4. Pref. coating compsn. incorporates some urea-HCHO resin. The pigment: resins ratio in the external coating should be 40:60-65:35 pref. 50:50-60:40. Pref. resin in an epoxy-ester of mol. wt. 1400 from reaction of oleic acid with diglycidylic ether of bisphenol A. Prod. is suitable for packaging to non-pressurised foods tolerate a brief hot sterilisation or pasteurisation treatment. The polyamide joint develops its chill strength more rapidly than chemically cured adhesive systems, and is suitable for automatic packaging cycles. Preprint pattern can extend across weld zone interface without weakening weld strength, facilitating decoration.
