This process is for improving the quality of rails where, on leaving the finishing stand in the rolling mill train, the upper part of the railhead or mushroom is subjected to surface quenching by means of a suitable liq., the cooling conditions being controlled so that on leaving the quenching zone the portion of the railhead which was not quenched is at a sufficiently high temp. to temper the quenched surface layer and also to ensure that the non-quenched region is transformed from austenite to ferrite. The quenching liq. can be water, possibly contg. mineral salts or surfactants, a mist of lig. in a gas, or a gas, e.g. water-vapour. The process can be carried out directly after rolling, i.e. no additional heating is required.
