Abstract
Polyhydric alcohols are prepd. in high yield by contacting a carbohydrate with H2 in an aq. medium at pref. 100-200 degrees C and pressure >=7(70-21) kp/cm2 and pH >=3(3-4.5) esp. 3.5-4, in presence of a Ru-contg. alumino-silicate having an SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio >=3. Method is used for hydrogenation of monosaccharides and hydrogenolysis of polysaccharides. Cheap, mixed carbohydrates may be used, giving high selectivity to sorbitol, from either glucose or a starch hydrolysate. The catalyst has high strength and is easily regenerated without removal of carrier.
