Abstract

Cellulosic fibres impregnated internally with a resin for use e.g., in prepn. of tampons, tissue paper, napkins, wadding, upholstery matls. etc., are prepd. by (a) prepg. a suspension of (I) cellulosic fibres in water, (b) adjusting the pH of the suspension to a value at which (I) swells, (c) adding (II) a resin that increases the moisture resistance of (I), while agitating and macerating the suspensions; (d) reducing the pH of the suspension to a lower value at which (I) contracts and (II) polymerises, (e) dehydrating the suspension to a concn. which facilities the sepn. of (I), (f) sepg. (I), and (g) drying (I) and crosslinking (II). This gives prodts. with a good resistance to moisture and compression, a soft handle, a higher porosity, and good intermingling props. The prodt. can be easily processed on papermaking machines.
