Abstract
The invention relates to an ignition system having: a high voltage generator in particular a step up transformer with a primary side and a secondary side; an electrical energy source which can be connected to the primary side; and a spark gap which is designed to carry a current transferred by the step up transformer to the secondary side. The step up transformer has a bypass for transferring electrical energy from the electrical energy source to the secondary side. The invention is characterised in that the ignition system is designed to couple in electrical energy as an electrical current in the form of a controlled pulse sequence in particular in the kilohertz range in series with or parallel to the secondary side of the high voltage generator in order to maintain an ignition spark. The invention also relates to a corresponding method for generating and maintaining an ignition spark.
