Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain, for a carrying grip, a secure fixing member which can shorten assembly time by being connected from behind to the outside edge part of a mushroom-shaped protrusion formed on a container casing by an undercut part formed on the lower face of a support plate. CONSTITUTION: A support plate 4 fixed separably on a container casing 1 fits from behind the outside edge of a mushroom-shaped protrusion 2 integrally formed on a container casing 1 by an undercut part 18 formed on the lower face of the support plate 4. Here, a carrying grip 6 and the support plate 4 before connected to a swivel pin 7 are spread open, and then inserted in the protrusion 2. A separating slit 8 formed in the support plate 4 starts first from the outside edge of the support plate 4, then separates a bearing table 3 protruding from the support plate 4, and then opens in a hole 9[JP3133745A]
Description
CARRYING-HANDLE ATTACHMENT The present invention relates to a carrying-handle attachment on a plastic container in which a bracket plate that supports the carrying handle is secured to the casing or container body .
The bracket plate of the carrying handle, which is in the form of a pivoting handle, is prefabricated and when hot is installed manually into the opened blow mold in a recess provided for this purpose. Once the halves of the blow mold have closed around the extruded blank, the blowing process begins and the tube presses against the inner shape of the mold whereupon the bracket plate is welded to the outer side of the inflated container because of heat. Once the container has been removed from the mold the prefabricated carrying handle is connected to the bracket plate.
Such a procedure is not satisfactory. For example, should the preheated temperature not be sufficient, there is not a proper weld with the container body, so that the bracket plate can tear out in the event that it is handled roughly. The preheating process is inconvenient and the installation of the bracket plate in the recess provided for it within the opened blow mold is not only time consuming but is also dangerous if the mold closes before the operator's hand has been removed from the mold.
It is an object of the present invention to create a safe carrying handle attachment on plastic containers, while avoiding the welding-on process and without any need for manipulation in the open blow mold, and at the same time saving installation time.
According to the present invention there is provided in a carrying-handle attachment on a plastic container in which a bracket plate that supports the carrying handle is secured to the container body, the improvement wherein the bracket plate, which is secured releaseably to the container body and which can be spread apart by at least one dividing gap, fits with an undercut section that is formed on its under side over an outer edge of a mushroom-shaped projection formed from the container body so as to provide a shape-locking fit.
The bracket plate that is releaseably attached to the container body, and which can be spread apart by the incorporation of at least one dividing gap, fits when installed with a recessed section that is formed on its under side over the outer edge of a projection that is shaped out of the container body, so as to form a shape fit. This makes a mechanical attachment of the carrying-handle possible on a container that has already been removed from the blow mold. The snap-on process is comparatively short, can be undertaken at any time, there is no need for a preheating process; and in one special design the attachment of a carrying handle that has already been combined with the bracket plate can be effected in the shortest possible time. The releaseable attachment makes it possible to remove the carrying handle combination, should this be necessary.
Usually, the carrying handle is supported on a bearing block on a bracket plate by a pivot pin. According to the present invention, in this case there is a dividing gap in the bracket plate; this begins at the bracket edge, divides the bracket plate and the bearing block and ends beneath the bearing block in the inner field of the bracket plate, the material bridge that is left between the ends of the gap and the edge of the plate forming a spread hinge for the bracket plate.
In this embodiment, before it is combined with the carrying handle the bracket plate is spread apart at the sides onto the mushroom-shaped projection on the container body, pressed together to provide a shape fit and, in this position, secured with the carrying handle that is subsequently installed and held in position by the pivot pin. 1, In one embodiment of the invention there are two dividing gaps that are spaced apart, which enclose a tab between them, and which begin at the upper edge of the plate and extend into the centre area of the bracket plate, the distance between these at the beginning of the gap being slightly less than the inside diameter of the undercut circle on the under side of the plate, the bracket plate making a transition to become the carrying handle within the ends of the gap, through a hinge-shaped transition.
In this embodiment, the carrying handle and the bracket plate are assembled together at the start of the assembly process and are installed on the container in one operation.
To this end, the bracket plate is installed from below against the projection of the container body and is slid into position. When this is done, the tab folds back slightly and only closes to form a shaped fit with the projection when the sliding procedure is completed. The undercut section lies under slight tension against the outer edge of the projection. In addition to saving time, in this embodiment there is also a saving of material and weight.
In this embodiment, a detent rib that fits into a corresponding recess on the under side of the bracket plate is arranged on the upper side of the body projection so as to prevent the carrying-handle attachment from rotating.
In the case of a one-piece hinge transition between the bracket plate and the carrying handle, it is advantageous that the detent rib and the recess be so arranged that the recess connects the ends of the gap in the bracket plate with each other. The weakening of the material that is brought about by doing this simplifies the pivoting movement of the tab during the assembly process.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :- Figure 1 shows a carrying-handle attachment on the container casing in plan view, showing a carrying handle that can pivot about a pivot pin; Figure 2 is a cross section taken along line A-B in figure 1 ; Figure 3 is a plan view of a carrying handle with a hinge connection between the bracket plate; and Figure 4 is a section taken along line C-D in figure 3.
In the embodiment shown in figures 1 and 2, a bracket plate 4, which is releaseably secured to the container body 1, fits with a recessed portion 18 (figures 2 and 4) that is formed on its. under side behind the outer edge of a mushroom-shaped projection that is formed from the container body 1, after it has been spread apart prior to assembly with the carrying handle 6 and the pivot pin 7 , and then installed on the projection 2.
As is shown in figures 1 and 2, within the bracket plate 4, beginning at the edge of the bracket, there is a dividing gap 8 which also splits the bearing block 3 that projects from the bracket plate 4 and then opens out into a drilled hole 9 that forms the end of the gap. The material bridge between the circular end of the gap 8 and the edge of the plate acts as a hinge when the bracket plate 4 is spread apart.
Once it has snapped into its shape fit, the carrying handle 6 is installed on the bearing block 3 and fixed in place by means of the pivot pin 7 that passes through the bearing drillings under tension. The bracket plate 4 is secured on the body projection 2 thereby. The outer arm 5 of the bearing block 3 that is of T-shaped cross section forms a pivot stop for the carrying handle 6, so that when a full container is being carried, it is held at a fixed distance from the container body.
On the upper side of the body projection there is a detent rib 17 to prevent rotation and this fits in the corresponding recess on the under side of the bracket plate 4 that has been installed .
In the embodiment shown in figures 3 and 4 there are two dividing gaps 10 that are adjacent to each other and these lead from the upper edge of the plate into the centre area of the bracket plate 4 so that a tab 16 is contained between them.
The lower ends of the dividing gaps 10 are connected to each other through the receiving groove for the detent rib 17 that is indicated by the dashed line in figure 3, so that the tab 16 can be easily pivoted out of the plane of the drawing. The distance between the upper gap openings has been so selected that when the bracket plate 4 is slid from below onto the outer edge of the casing projection 2, the ends of the undercut section fit over its periphery under tension. Thus the intervening distance is made smaller than the diameter of the undercut circle or of the outer edge of the projection 2, respectively.
Beneath the gap end, the bracket plate 4 makes a transition through a hinge-like transition point 13 into the carrying handle 12, the upward pivoting motion of which is limited by a stop 14.
In both the embodiments, the projection 2 is located in a trough-like depression in the container body 1.
