Description

The present invention relates to a locking mechanism especially adapted for installation in a door of any More specifically the locking mechanism of the present invention relates to a mechanism for operating a multiplicity of locking latches which latches are adapted to project from within the door into the framework and threshold so as to bolt said door or the like from two or more of There are known in the art various types of such locking arrangements which comprise several locking bars whose inner ends are attached to a toothed wheel and wherein said wheel is in mesh with and turnable by a second toothed wheel or gear which is mounted on and operated by a cylinder According to the present there 1s provided a locking mechanism especi ally adapted for installation in a door comprising a plurality of locking latches having projections adapted to be displaced from a position within said door to a locking position with said projections extending outwardly from said actuating means operationally coupled to said locking latches and adapted to effect the displacement a locking means situated in spaced apart ship from said actuating means and chain means operationally coupling said latch actuating means and said locking The major advantage of the present arrangement over the known devices is envisioned in the fact that the latches actuating means need not be situated in close proximity to the locking means as necessary in an arrangement wherein the two toothed wheels but the actuating means can be installed in any convenient part of a door in a apart relationship to any locking This relationship facilitates the proper installation of the bulkier and heavier actuating at a stronger part of the deor while the operating lock may be elsewhere at any other suitable section Furthermore such arrangement enables a random placement of said actuating mechanism in relation to said locking means thereby increasing the difficulty of detecting from the outside of the door the exact location of said In this the prior art drawback of burglars drilling through the door to the mechanism which is known to be in a fixed meshed relationship with the locking in order to manually activate the mechanism and release the is specific reference now to the figures 1n detal 1t is stressed that the particulars shown are by way of example and for purposes of illustrative discussion of the preferred embodiments of the present invention only and are presented in the cause of providing what is believed to be the most useful and readily understood description of the principles and ceptual aspects of the In this regard no attempt is made to show structural dstails of the system in more detail than 1s necessary for a fundamental understanding of the invention the description taken with the drawings making apparent to those skilled in the art how the several forms of the invention may be embodied in In the is a plan view of one embodiment of a locking mechanism of the 2 is a side view partly in section of the mechanism of and 3 is a plan view of a second embodiment of a locking In 1 and 2 there is shown a locking mechanism adapted to be installed in doors or the like which mechanism is essentially composed of a plurality of locking latches a locking means actuating means 6 operationally coupled to said locking latches 2 and a chain means 8 drivingly coupling said locking means 4 and actuating means As seen in the the locking latches are pivotally hinged by short axles 10 to a The latter is usually pivotally mounted with an axle 14 in a housing said member may be directly mounted inside the door on a ment strut or the 12 is provided with guiding slots 18 which cooperate with slots 20 made in housing 16 to guide each of the axles 10 and in turn locking latches in the direction of arrows when said is imparted a rotational movement about axle 14 as indicated by arrow This rotational movement of is effected by the chain which either engages arround its circumference on properly provided teeth or otherwise attached to its free ends as shown The shown locking means 4 is a pin tumbler cylinder operable by a key from both sides of the door and preferrably having a sprocket wheel 22 mounted which wheel 22 engages chain 8 to transmit the rotational movement of said locking means 4 via the chain to the it can be readily understood that upon the rotation of the key from an unlocked to a locking the sprocket wheel 22 will drive the chain 8 and the will be axles 10 will be moved in guiding slots 18 and 20 and hence the free ends or projections of the locking latches 2 will be displaced from their unlocking position inside the door to an outwardly extending wherein said projections will engage Turning now to there is shown a slightly different embodiment of the locking mechanism described with reference to 1 and 2 The difference resides in a modified actuating means which consists of a 24 pivotally hinged to housing 16 at 14 and a plurality of linking arms 26 which are hinged at one of their end sections 28 at points arround the peripheral edge of said The of said linking arms 26 are coupled to locking latches by means of short axles 30 which axles guidingly engage slots 20 in housing The operation of the locking mechanism in accordance with this embodiment is similar to the operation of the mechanism described in connection with 1 and 2 except that the linear motion imparted to the locking latches is here effected by the combined movements of the 24 and the 26 which arms are guided in slots While for the purpose of convenience the locking means 4 has been shown as mounted on housing it should be understood that said locking means 4 may be installed in any convenient place in the door and thus the chain which operationally couples said locking means and the ating is adjusted in length after installing the two means in their proper place in the the chain may be strung arround the locking means in any expedient manner dictated by a particular it will be evident to those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the details of the foregoing illustrative embodiments and examples and that the present invention may be embodied in other specific forms out departing from the spirit or essential attributes and it is therefore desired that the present embodiments be insufficientOCRQuality
