Description

•jspia *oo o *iaino o*p n πτ»π» Element for connecting foamed plaetlo parts Artur Flsoher 45534/2 The Invention concerns an element for connecting foamed^ plastics parts and especially for securing components of a toy building kit to foamed plastics parts and is an improvemen of the invention described and claimed in Israel Patent Specification 42928 (herein "the main invention*).
Adhesive substances have long been used for the purpose of connecting foamed plastics parts and securing structures and groups of model elements to toy landscapes made of foamed plastics parts. However, a fixing method of this kind, that does not permit separation of the parts, precludes subsequent variation of the landscape and, in particular, the changing of the positions of the groups of model elements on it. This is particularly disadvantageous in the case of landscapes for structures and groups of model elements that are mad up of the components of a toy building kit, since when use is made of a fixing method, such as bonding, that does not permit separation of the parts, neither the landscape nor the parts forming the models can be put to further use.
The object of the present invention is to provide a means whereby structures and groups of model elements can be secured even on landscape-building boards of foamed plastics material in a stable and tension-resisting, but detachable manner.
The main invention provides a fixing element for a building plate made of foamed plastics serving as a landscape forming base for model construction groups which are assembled from construction members with preferably undercut grooves and undercut joining pins as joining means, characterized in that the fixing element comprises a fixing member in 45534/2 the form of a knife-shaped shaft for insertion in the building^ plate, and on its front side opposite the fixing member a joining means for affixing the model construction groups, and that a collar is arranged between the joining means and the fixing member, for limiting the depth of insertion.
According to the present invention there is provided a connecting element for connecting foamed plastics parts consisting of a connecting element to be inserted perpendicularly into the foamed plastics part and having a flat fixing portion which can be pressed into the foamed plastics part and in vHch are formed openings through which a further fixing element can be driven to pass through the fixing portion of the connecting element, characterized in that the fixing portions of both the connecting element and the fixing element are blade shaped and that the end of the connecting element projecting outward from the foamed plastics part is provided with a connecting means for securing thereto components of a toy building kit.
The fixing portion of the connecting element, which may be made by injection-moulding, is pressed into the foamed plastics part at right-angles to the surface thereof. On account of its flat form, the fixing portion readily penetrates the soft and porous material and in so doing passes through the fibres of the foamed plastics part so that there is no crumbling of the material surrounding the point of penetration such as would occur for example if blunt fixing elements were used. Crumbling results in the material losing its elasticity and clamping force, which are primarily responsible for the anchoring effect of the fixing portion. Thus, since substantially no crumbling of the structure occurs when elasticity and clamping force of the structure are retained and little destruction of the material, causing deformation of the surface, occurs.
To enable the fixing element better to resist forces tending to pall it out, a further fining element is driven in transversely to the fixing portion of the connecting element and is caused to pass through one of the openings in the fixing portion. If the fixing portion of the connecting element is fitted near the edge of the plastics part, the fixing element can be inserted substantially at right-angles from the side of the plastics part. If however the connecting element is not inserted near the edge, the fixing element is likewise pushed in from the top so that it passes through the fixing portion of the connecting element at a wide, .angle to that portion. Since the fixing portion has a number of openings, it is always possible to form a cross-connection irrespective of the angle at which the fixin element is inserted.
The connecting element is particularly designed for use in the building up of toy landscapes, and especially of structures of the kind made up of components of a toy building kit, since such models are made up for use during only short periods. The connecting element of the invention renders it possible to extend o1" alter the landscape at any time by the addition of further components and thus to adapt it to a new group of model elements and to a new arrangement of the structure. Furthermore, with a suitable form of connecting element the latter can serve as a basis for the addition of components of a toy building kit, so that models can be secured in a stable manner to the foamed plastics part.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention, the openings may be widened at each of their sides to provide a funnel shape, by means of inclined lead-in surfaces. This funnel-like widening of the openings facilitates insertion of the fixing elements which in particular prevent the fixing element from being pulled out of the foamed plastics material. If, when inserting a fixing element, it is not in precise register with an opening, the inclined lead-in surfaces cause the tip of the fixing elemen to be deflected and to find its way through the opening.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention, a connecting means, preferably an undercut connecting stud, can be provided at that end of the connecting element remote from its fixing portion. The connecting means enables components of a toy building kit to be attached, these components being provided with mating connecting means. Thus, the model built by the child is detachably secured to the surface of the landscape, so that the model can be readily replaced by another model. By using only a -few connecting elements, components and building boards can be secured to the surface of the landscape, and these in turn are provided with a larger number of connecting means for adding units of a toy building kit.
Finally, in accordance with yet another feature of the invention, an abutment flange is provided betxveen the connecting means and the fixing portion of the connecting element. This flange limits the depth to which the connecting element can be inserted.
To round off the invention, the further fixing element has a blade-like shank and is provided at its top with a transverse cylindrical bar which limits the extent to which it can be inserted. The blade-like form of the shaft enables the fixing element readily to penetrate the foamed plastics part, and, by avoidance of crumbling of the material, a relatively good anchoring effect of the fixing element is also achieved.
Irrespective of the angle at which the fixing element is inserted, the transverse cylindrical bar at its top can be pressed so far into the surface of the foamed plastics part that a smooth surface, uninterrupted by any projecting parts, is provided.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows, in section, the connecting element pressed into a plastics part■ and the fixing element inserted transversely to the connecting element, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the connecting element with the fixing element inserted transversely thereto.
The connecting element 1 has a flat fixing portion 2 in which is formed a plurality of openings 3. To facilitate insertion of the fixing element i each of these openings is widened at each of its sides to form a funnel shape, by means of inclined lead-in surfaces 5· At that end of the connecting element 1 remote from its fixing portion 2 is an undercut connecting stud 6 which is suitable for adding a component 7 of a toy building kit. Between the connecting stud 6 and the fixing portion 2 is an abutment flange which limits the depth of. insertion of the connecting element 1» To prevent the connecting element 1 from being pulled out of the foamed plastics part 9 after it has been inserted there^-in, the fixing element 4 is inserted transversely to the fixing portion 2, the cross-section of the shank 10 of the fixing element corresponding to the size of each opening 3 formed in the fixing portion 2 of the connecting element 1. To facilitate insertion into the foamed plastics material, the shank 10 has a pointed end and is of blade-like form. To limit the depth to which it can be inserted, the fixing element 4 has a transverse cylindrical bar 11 at its top, which bar together with the shank 10 forms a T .
