1473355 Washers; joint making packing NATIONAL PLANT HIRE (PTY) Ltd 15 July 1974 [17 July 1973 19 July 1973 14 May 1974] 31279/74 Headings F2B and F2H A sealing washer assembly for use, e.g. with roofing nails 8, comprises a rigid washer 1 and a sealing washer 2 having a ridged formation for engaging the surface through which the nail is passed and a projection 12 passing through the washer 1. The bore 6 may have a diaphragm across it (not shown) for piercing by the nail or a ridge 4 may engage the nail to ensure sealing. Alternatively the bore may have one or more tapered portions, the narrow parts of which engage the nail. The portion 12 may be of expanded form to retain the washers assembled or may be a loose fit in the rigid washer and be compressed by the head of the nail, Fig. 7 (not shown). The washers 1, 2, may be each made up in latches joined at their edges by integral portions. The two batches can then be assembled in one operation and individual assemblies separated as required. Claims (9)

1. A sealing washer assembly for use with a roofing fastener to seal against the head and shank thereof and against a roof surface comprising} a dished metal washer} a centrally perforated liner of resilient plastics material abutting the washer and covering and at least filling the concavity, thereof| a central protruding portion of the liner through which the perforation passes and which projects through a central aperture and beyond the outer surface of the washer, at least three concentric radially spaced annular ridges on the side of the liner remote from said protruding portion between t he perforation and the outer peripheral edge of the liner, which ridges project beyond the outer edge of the washer, the height of each ridge being substantially less than the thickness of the liner} and at least one resilient constriction located in the perforation through the liner.

2. A sealing washer assembly as claimed in claim 1 in which said constriction comprises a radially intruding peripheral resi- 2 lient ridge in said perforation.

3. A sealing washer assembly as claimed in claim 1, in which said constriction comprises a diaphragm located across the perforation through the liner, the diaphragm having a central portion thinner than the peripheral portion thereof,

4. · A sealing washer assembly as claimed in claim 1 in which •aid constriction is formed by an inwardly tapering section - 22 - 45287/2 of the vail defining the central perforation through the liner.

5. · A sealing washer assembly as olaimed in any of the preceding claims in vhioh the liner is of plastics material.

6. A sealing vasher assembly as olaimed in any of the preceding claims in vhich the protruding portion of the liner projecting through the vasher is outvardly lipped tovards its free and thereby engages the vasher*

7. A sealing vasher as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 in vhich the protruding portion of the liner projecting through the vasher passes freely through the aperture in the vasher and is adapted on compression to expand into sealing engagement with the vasher.

8. · A sealing vasher assembly as claimed in claim 7 in vhich the transverse dimension of the protruding portion of the liner decreases tovard the free end thereof.

A roofing fastener assembly comprising a sealing vasher assembly as claimed in either of claims 7 or 8 in combination vith a roofing fastener adapted to pass through the perfp- ration in the liner and to expand the central protruding portion of the liner into sealing engagement vith the vashef. 10· A method of assembling a roofing fastener assembly as claimed in claim 9, the method including the folloving stepsi a) placing a vasher and a liner together such that the projecting portion of the liner passes freely through the aperture in the vasherf b) locating the free end of a fastener in the end of the perforation emerging in the protruding portion of the 45287/2 - 23 - v c) forcing the sealing washer assembly and the head of the fastener toward each other such that the liner resiliently engages around the shank of the fastener and engages with the washer* 11) A method as claimed in claim 10 in which the liners are arranged in ah interconnected block or line Configuration. 12) A sealing washer assembly substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings* 13) A roofing fastener assembly substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. 14) A method of forming a roofing fastener assembly substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings* FOR THE APPLICANTS DR.
